flash + firefox

hp pavilion amd phenom 2.6ghz laptop with 4gb memory, pretty low specs i'd imagine these days, however it runs great for 90% of what i use it for.

firefox 28.0, flash 13.0 r0. whenever i visit sites like twitch or even youtube the cpu fan goes nuts and CPU usage is through the roof. otherwise, it's extremely quiet and stable.

have played with hardware acceleration in flash and firefox settings to no avail. have searched and never found a working solution.

do other browsers work better? not gonna use IE, but might try something else if its worth it.

And no at this state other browsers probably won't work better. You can try Chrome if you strictly use it only for Twitch/Youtube (and nothing else, and keep it to 2 tabs).

Can try to view task manager to see what process (the browser I suspect, but you'll never know) to see what else is giving the CPU a spanking.

just adblock and noscript for addons. for task manager it's just firefox and flash, pretty minimal install with not much else going on. if i stop watching something with flash, the fan stays loud until i go into task manager and end process on flash, actually. habit at this point, but really annoying.

Wait, you have an amd phenom in your laptop? That's pretty old cpu, guessing maybe 5-7 years or so. Is your gfx also a 4250 series or close? Flash itself has always been pretty intensive, more so when the hardware can't accelerate it.

As Stig mentioned, try out Chrome, since it has flash built in that's slightly different than the plugin for firefox/IE. Does youtube on 360p or lower settings do the same thing? Also have to remember that such old hardware has trouble dealing with 720p or 1080p video in a browser. Maybe a video driver update could help if you're feeling lucky: http://support.amd.com/en-us/downloa...s%207%20-%2032 , I made the assumption you were on windows 7, otherwise search that site for the mobility driver that matches your OS (make sure it is the mobility/laptop one, they are different), and try to set a restore point before installing the driver just in case shit hits the fan.

And yeh the laptop (CPU) is way too old. Even 2006/2007 Core2Duo CPUs struggle these days I've noticed. Given how inconsiderate these days websites are these days at a PC's specs, it will push the CPU no matter what (heck, even if a site loads a bunch of scripts it'll probably kneel down for a bit). Those CPUs are no way as near efficient as the ones today, but might perform higher at times in a straight line performance. Hard to explain, need to go home, but don't worry! lol

makes sense, and while the noise is annoying, i can still play the videos at source quality just fine. nothing to be done til i'm in the market for a new computer, i suppose.
