Need some input on a new GPU

I am looking to buy a new GPU soon am I was wondering if the 780 TI http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desk...rce-gtx-780-ti, or the 980 http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desk...eforce-gtx-980 is better for gaming? I was going to buy the 780 Ti before the 980 came out but now that its out I am wondering if its better then the 780 Ti for gaming.

have you thought about the 970? it's almost as good as the 980 but several hundred dollars cheaper.

980's the best single chip GPU available atm. can just wait for 3rd generation maxwell though, probably coming Q1 2015. wouldn't place too much stock in the 380/390/Titan2 rumors. a single guy getting three prototype GPUs and being allowed to benchmark them before any major tech reviewer is suspect as all fuck

You will not get better Price/Performance than the GTX970 or the R90's. There is almost no reason to buy a 980 because of how well the 970's perform, so much so that if you want a 980 you might as well sli 970s.

There's also no real reason to play the waiting game because there's always something "in a few months" and the 8gb versions really aren't going to benefit you.

If for some reason you need the best available card, or are gaming at 1600p, 3440 21:9, or 4k, then the 980 is the best choice. If you're gaming at 1080p then you're throwing money away.

970 G1 with a slight OC I can almost max demanding games like Shadow of Mordor and DA: I usually have to pop AA down/shadows @ 1440p. Other games like WoW, BF3, CoD: AW has no problem maxing. So like others said if you're at 1080p then 970 is way more than enough, but if you're going 1440+ then maybe a 980/SLI 970 if you want to shell out the extra $

Not to hijack... But I'm entertaining building a new PC, current system is almost a good 8 years old.

I think the most I'd pay for in the GPU department is a 970, but I do really like the idea of a 1440p monitor. Torn between sticking with a nice 1080p monitor and max settings on almost everything, or going with a 1440p and maybe having to compromise on that time to time... 970 still max out most games at 1440p?

That's a great question. I'm also torn about getting a new 1440p monitor or a new gpu. I have a 770 2gb in my main rig that's hooked up to the tv (1080p 60hz) and will be using a R9 280 3gb in my secondary rig where I have a 23" 1080p 60hz IPS monitor. I have $85 in credit on amazon burning up and I have no idea what to do with it. I think the OP's question is a great one right now because we just don't know what the max needed really is right now.

Yeah... I certainly feel comfortable with a 970 being able to handle anything at 1080p, as posters here & googlefu+benchmarks seem to agree with.

Buuuut now I'm torn on whether it's worth the extra awesomeness to jump up to a 1440p monitor, or if the trade-off in FPS/lower settings is big and frequent enough to just stick to 1080p. (again, assuming a 970 is the card of choice)

970 is perfectly fine for 1440p, you do not need a 980 for it. And with the prices the way the are, if you needed more power you could sli 970s for only a little bit more than the cost of a 980 and it'll blow away the 980 in performance.

I game everything maxed at 1600p and am soon upgrading to 3440x1440 21:9 ultra wide. The 970 is more than enough gpu for pretty much any resolution below 4K.
