its interesting because I've never seen a media company as transparent as them. They post almost all internal memos which means something is up. Even their current writers have gone mostly silent on twitter. The ones that are active are only retweeting things that have nothing to do with Gawker or the story.
Would enjoy seeing Gawker burn an crumble from this honestly. They're a horrible site to begin with but this Hogan case just shone a big light on their blatant hypocrisy. I mean of course in regards to openly refusing to remove and stand behind posting a sex video of Hulk Hugan, and in another article demonizing "The Fappening" as the most horrible thing ever.
I am definitely the biggest (maybe only!) Gawker fan on BG. A lot of the shit they do dumbfounds me but I honestly feel they have a very important voice and role in the current social/political/media climate. I don't know of any other company ready to fill that void so I really hope they survive this.
You're not along Tyven. I like Gawker as well, not for their Hulk Hogan stories or when they try to out a Conde Nast CEO. If their appeal doesn't fall through and they end up shutting down, I'll miss Gawker, Deadspin (I'll really miss Deadspin), and occasionally Gizmodo/io9/Kotaku.
But Tyven, I'll be there with you randomly typing gawker.com and getting linked to a dead end if this ends it. More than likely we'll just have to keep an eye out for where some of their better writers go to.
Plus, to find that post i had to go to sausage.gawker.com back when they decided to split the fuck out of gawker and make the main website just bigger headlines.
Punitive damages incoming. Fucking christ I wouldn't want to be there right now.
Deadspin![]()
Deadspin would be a truly great loss.
Hogan, the conde nast scandal, the pointless war with gamergaters and the blatant hypocrisy they often displayed were so frustrating, but when I look at their shitty fucking alternatives, Buzzfeed, Vice, Huffpo, Vox(lol) I would take Gawker and their shortcomings EVERY time. Cafe is doing a good job carving out a nice leftist nitch with gawker-esque bite, but aside from Carl Diggler, they don't seem to have anywhere near the talent on their writing staff
It is my understanding that they secured a ton of new investment money with the trial looming so hopefully they are in shape to handle this and they can hang on to what great talent they have left. The Conde Nast exodus really fucking hurt.
Ill miss Deadspin but it is a worthy sacrifice to take down everything else. Fuck Gawker.

http://deals.kinja.com/ is what I'm really going to miss.
From what I'm reading it though. If they want to appeal they have to put $50 million +2 years interest into an escrow account.
This is not a good weekend for gawker.
this is a sad and tired argument lol. Jezebel can publish whatever the fuck it wants. Jezebel is also a feminist site. Why would this surprise anyone? Add to the fact that John Cook and AJ Delaurio were no longer with the site when the fappening happened
all that being said, the shit they pulled with the Hogan tape was SO fucking stupid
Spoiler: show
Yah, those images are what i meant in my post.
I'd be interested in seeing some of their positive influences if you have any on hand. It'd be nice to see a positive side to Gawker, I'm open for changing my mind on my opinion of the website.
deadspin and jalopnik will be missed for me if they go dark.
Remember how cool it was to share celebrity nudes and shit until The Fappening happened?
Pepperage farm remembers.
Edit: Jalopnik is really good to. I'm not in any way a gearhead but i just love reading some of the articles that pop up.
Gawker already announced that they're appealing.

Patrick, formerly of Giant Bomb and now with Kotaku, had this to say on the subject;

Jalopnik, Deadspin, and Gawker all have great comment sections too. WHAT OTHER SITES ON THE INTERNET CAN SAY THAT?
Can anyone elaborate as to what exactly the case was about?
Was there actually anything illegal about publishing the video?
not necessarily illegal which is why it was a civil case. basically hogan sued for invasion or privacy and emotional distress. Gawker defense was based around freedom of press because Hogan is a celeb and therefore it is news. Their real undoing is that they did not remove the video after being ordered to be a judge. Also calling it a sex tape is a bit of an overstatement. 2 minute video, 9 seconds of sex. I havent watched it since it first happened but I don't even remember if you can see any of the naughty bits.
Many conservatives (general gawker targets) along with celebrities, media elite, and average joes who have had their feelings hurt are celebrating the outcome. however prominent voices in media including the executive director of the free press, worry about the precedent a ruling like this could set.
Basically how long until president Trump tries to shut down the New York Times over emotional distress?
More than a few Gawker people are posting wangsty tweets, and a couple people over at Polygon are crying about his this violates freedom of the press.
Gawker fucked up their defense. They ignored a court order to remove the video. They played hypocritical double standards over it being okay or not okay to leak celebrity nudes or video. My thought is that the appeal is entirely designed to give their bloggers (because this ain't journalism) time to find new jobs. The clickbait community will rally around this and try to recover from this devastating blow to freedom. There'll be blogs and probably a Cracked article about how unfair it was for Hogan to, you know, contest a media website leaking a private video of him having sex. This is probably a stalling tactic, and I'd bet money on it.
Disclaimers: I'm drunk and angry about other stuff and saw this news and shit this is dumb fuck internet clickbait bloggers
Edit, because Tyven had good points:
The actual video ran almost 30 minutes but the only released internet cut was much shorter.
This was leaked by Bubba the Love Sponge (don't ask) if I remember right? and technically exists as revenge porn, since the two had a falling out before this suddenly appeared in the hands of the media.
I don't have sources because, as mentioned, I'm drunk.
The precedent as far as my feeble brain understands it is that maybe in the future the blogging media shouldn't post sex videos and refuse to remove them when a court says to.
