Crusader Kings II - GOD WILLS IT!

I'm linking the original article that got me curious, and ultimately made me want to buy this.

    http://kotaku.com/5972744/why-crusad...me-of-the-year

And they are spot on. This should be game of the year. If you have any hint of a desire to play a strategy game, you have to try this. If your a history buff, you have to try this. If you want a REAL GAME OF THRONES game... buy this now!

Noblemountain and I are in the same boat. There is a pretty huge learning curve. Not because of the difficulty, but the sheer amount of information you need to know, and then balance.

If you are looking for action, this doesn't have it. You can go to war, but its more of a tool, and not even the best one. You are trying to survive 400 years by creating a dynasty, not make the entire risk board red (I always played red)

As for the Game of Thrones comments; The game plays like a crazy version of GoT meets European history... and there is a mod that in every way, replicates Westeros and all of the politics/houses within GRR Martin's world. The mod is so good, you might want to polish up on your understanding of all of the houses before you dive into it.

Second this, having a lot of fun so far...just 3 or so hours in though. The GoT mod is linked in that Kotaku article and is supposed to be amazing, I haven't tried it out yet as I'm trying to get a handle on the basic game first.

I am currently the King of the Holy Roman Empire. I have male heir who I have left in the hands of my favorite bishop. I have 2 daughters who I plan on marrying to make gains in neigboring countries. I have also squashed a rebellion and waged two holy wars. I've only had one plot against me. I found out who it was, imprisoned them, then forgave them, and they helped me wipe out a country helping my enemy in my 2nd holy war. Thats 30 years so far in my 400

Pricy, $40 for the base game, $15 for the gameplay expansions.
It was on sale several times the past two months, I was able to get it from amazon in a paradox bundle for $10 (along with 4 other games).

Ya, I got it for $25 with a bunch of expansions. That said, I still would pay $50 for the whole thing. Worth it.

The pack may show up on amazons editor's choice deals this month. A bit of patience may save you a whack of cash.

And heres a CKII from Gamasutra

This appeals to me. I eagerly await the next sale. I can't bring myself to pay full price for many games, these days.

downloaded the demo and tried to play. Got stuck on the tutorials lol
Twice now it wants me to do things that I can't. "Press this button to do this", yet there is no such button anywhere I can find on my screen
That and the tutorial just bores me, it's not really teaching me anything. I'm just copying what it tells me to do.
So then I just jump in to an actual game and just sit there because I have no idea what I can or should be doing

I started out much smaller: chose the count of Hainaut because well... that's where I live.
Weird shit happens when you start small: I was building up relations with some Holy Roman Empire neighbours, sending sons & daughter as wards, marrying various courtiers, bethrothing heirs and so forth,... and then daddy died; inherited the Duchy of Flanders which includes Boulogne, Artois, Guines, Brugge, Gent and Hainaut... and instantly switched my allegieance from the HRE to France!

Ok, it gets weirder. My 16yo daughter tried to kill me. Had a pretty good opinion of me, but he traits did show that ethics weren't much of a concern for her... and just after that, my mother tried to have me killed as well! (she had a great opinion of me, +65, so I don't know what happened)

This game is confusing as fuck and I barely know what I'm doing. But I can work with that. I just roleplay the incompetent king who fucks bitches and kills people. Huzzah! Anyone know how multiplayer works? Could be some good times.

Roleplaying is the word. It seems, to make this less confusing, you need to strictly roleplay.

I love this game, got it a while ago. There is a wiki out there that isn't the greatest but still somewhat useful. Good start people would be any of the spanish kings, or you can follow this guide for Dublin: http://crusaderkings-two.wikia.com/w...ing_of_Ireland

I started quite a few games before I got the hang of it, I think following the dublin guide is a good way to get familiar with the basics. I haven't played in a while sadly I have a really good game of thrones game going where I'm Dorne and like everyone in my family stands to inherit most of westros.. just need the iron islands and one other region. I find the larger rulers are very difficult to manage with so many underlings and your sons all demanding land when they come of age :/

Anybody else having trouble getting it updated? I ran the updater that the launcher told me to download, and it's still showing up as 1.05b instead of 1.08 >_< Can't run the GoT mod because it needs the game to be fully updated.

EDIT: Herp'd when I should have derp'd. Got this shit figured out. Let's go, Dorne Dynasty!

This game and mod has really made me want an official Game of Thrones RTS. Even if I did just change the course of history by killing Aegon the Conqueror as he tried to invade the North.

Installed 1.08 and if I try to launch through the launcher it crashes, but double clicking the other shortcut that leads directly into the game loads fine. Did some googling and it supposedly has to do with the c++ redist pack but I installed both versions I could find and neither made a difference. My game is showing as 1.08 when I load without the launcher.

Man, when you start as a small-time count, you don't have the luxury of fucking bitches and killing people. You've got to be very very careful and endlessly cajole all your neighbours... as well as the big guys above you.

Not that it needs to be reiterated, but now it feels like the more time I spend playing, the more overwhelming it becomes. A lot of times I'm not even sure what the full ramifications are of choices that I make, and the tutorial doesn't really prepare you for anything. That being said, I'm having a lot of fun with it. Started in Dublin with the goal of just uniting Ireland, but I suspect that's only going to be the beginning.
