@#$%# EPSON! Thinking ahead; Any good newer printers (Laser okay) that don't cost a ton with ink?

Why I'm just a tad upset.

Ours is still printing and stuff after Her Highness (my dead sister) abused the crud out of it (printing handouts for Sunday School constantly like if it was a copier; printing out sewing patterns all the fragging time. Made Shadowneko mad b/c of the ink cost, he just bought and didn't listen last time, but this time he's listening) but a google search tells me that our printer is on the list of those that have that error! So it's a ticking time bomb..

Since it's been printing cruddy anyway I think it's time to think about a new one. It has to be networkable for one, able to plug in via cable as well (computer + router) and can't cost a arm and a leg with ink. From what I remember from my last whine about this, color laser might fit the bill but I have no idea about brands...

Color laser has high page yields, but keep in mind, toner is also expensive. So cheaper than ink when you are getting thousands of pages per cartridge versus less than 100 on ink, but sticker shock when it's time to restock may scare you as toner can run anywhere from 70-200 per cartridge depending on make/model.

If you are looking for just black and white prints, get a basic Brother Laserjet. Printer will run you about 150, cartridges I believe can be found for <100, and if I remember right, you are looking at about 1200 pages per cartridge.

For Color, HP makes some solid color laserjet printers, just try to avoid their pay as you go ink scam (if it's used for their laserjets). I've heard nightmares of their inkjets losing the ability to print cause they didn't disable the subscription ink service properly and it tried to bill ink costs to a non existent card, so it just outright disabled itself.

Thanks Mel, I'll pass that on. Seriously, she was teaching junior sunday school (I think you guys who aren't LDS will get that quicker than our term for it) and was printing a book of handouts every time since she was teaching the younger set. If that isn't printer abuse I don't know what is, and b/c of the printer abuse now that I know Espons brick themselves, makes me wonder if it's gonna do that any day now >< Makes me sad too. Back in the day Epson was a good name for a printer.

Rather get it recycled asap and get with something that won't cost us that much per page and doesn't have the brick-itself habit ><.

I could have bought an 11 pull and have 1000 gems left over, but all I got was this silly title.

I will second Brother Laserjet B+W. I got one with a scanner + fax as well. If you need to do color and it's not frequent, probably best to get those done at a FedEx Print & Ship Center to save on the color toner costs.

    It's $159 @ Staples for a barebones Print Only - https://www.staples.com/brother-hl-l...roduct_2764645

    $189 with scanner - https://www.staples.com/brother-hl-l...oduct_24286229

This story dropped yesterday lolEpson printers are programmed to simply stop working after a period of time

Buy a brother laser. TN toner, can get generic toner for next to nothing, lasts for years (the toner and the printer).

I use a brother laser for B/W and a Canon Pixma MG6620 inkjet for color, zero complaints other than a firmware update that almost bricked the canon a couple months ago, they got it sorted though.

like tyche said you can get generic toners for both of these and it's really not too bad. obviously if you are printing full color 8x10 pics or something you will burn through it

I'll add to the chorus of people saying just get a brother laser printer. The sticker shock is something, but when you don't have to replace it for months or over a year itll be worth it. There are color versions, but those are def likely too expensive for casual consumer use.

Tyche; that's the exact story I posted lol. But yeah, right now looking for ideas so we can get a reliable.

One good thing with sis not here is there's no one having to print a book of handouts every week anymore for the youngest in Sunday School (yep, printer abuse); makes me wonder if ours will die any time now. Better to head it off and get something that lasts. (Yeah, it was like 5-10 sheets per kid every fragging week. Our local church leadership at the time got mad at her for running that much off so she started doing it at home..and Shadowneko started getting mad and making snide remarks about it behind her back b/c of the ink costs.)

Me, I prefer to do things that might be a long print to my Kindle Fire instead(like faqs for games), as well as knitting patterns. Save. Ink. and A. Tree. But sometimes you gotta print stuff, so you need some kinda printer. 'Neko is adamant about having color though.

Salodin: Yeah, best not speak too ill of the dead, but in this situation what she did has to be mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if I see that error sooner or later b/c the ink pad's saturated BECAUSE of sis's printer abuse.

And yes, ink costs are something I'd rather take into consideration this time. I mean, we didn't know Sis would get asked to teach that Junior Sunday School class and be forced into that printer abuse because their Xerox machine is basically a color laser and they are watching costs! (Ink. Costs. Money.)

I'd go with Laser, way too fast and convenient. I've also had an unlucky streak with inkjets with most of them dying randomly.

My first laser was a brother BW, lasted about 10 years.

I am now using a HP 179fmw, never had any problems. Only wish it printed two sides. Whole set of toner cartridges cost about $100.

Protip: make sure you clean your print heads once a month. If you're getting voids on prints, its usually dirty print heads.

Depending on what you want to print on a daily basis, you should decide whether you want ink jet or fuser/PCDU style machines. Some machines are better at printing on different types of paper types and sizes.

Btw, I'm trained to fix printers, MFPs, and production level printers.

Dim; I'll tell brother to do that and I might just do a head clean now with our current; it's been printing like crap (smudged writing and such).

Can actually do a head clean from my puter at any time I want to; naturally our current printer is networked because do you REALLY need a printer for each person? I'd say no, and the networked printer saved us a lot of fights (before, it was just one printer and it was attached to ONE computer. Uh, that don't fly too well..)
