    Videogame marching band

You may have already seen this on some sites, but I figured I'd share. I actually go to this school, and although we lost the game horribly, this show was the only reason I even went. lol

    Our marching band played tunes from Mario Bros, Halo, Mortal Kombat, and ZELDA while doing formations related to them. Check it out. :}

When I was in high school my marching band usually had kinda lame shows... the *best* show that we ever did was Gustav Holst's "The Planets."

I never really did like Holst's "The Planets."

And I don't see why marching bands don't play marches. *Cough* Miltary Marching for life.

Marching band is the amateur part of "Music in Motion". You should check out Drum Corps for a highly competitive edge on things. http://www.dci.org/ I'm talkin NFL-like practices, lots and lots of traveling (sometimes international) I've been to Germany, Belgium, France, England, Amsterdam, Canada, Mexico and all around the US.

Imo, if you're into music, and you DON'T know about Drum Corps... shame on you.

What you think is hard core....is nothing compared to the Ohio State marching band. They practice just as much and just as hard as the football team.

If you so much as miss a single step in a game...you are punished the next practice. And by punished, I mean thrown into the Olentangy River with your instrument. Imagine fucking up in a November game......

That's a sweet idea... some of the band members have LiveJournals I think I'll suggest that to 'em. They're going to do this performance again in a game or two I think. I may try to take some pics/record a better quality video and post it.

I know man that was so sweet. :D You just know all the videogame dorks in the stadium splooged when they played the traditional theme and later did the Triforce. I was just astonished that they would even consider doing such a performance during a football game. I mean I know videogames are now pretty much part of popular culture, but they still have that stigma of being immature/for kids a bit. And I'm sure you can imagine how seriously people down here take football, so it surprised me.

I really enjoyed that. It was so amazing to see it all, and the Triforce on the field really did it for me!

I considered doing a summer in one of the drum corps near me, I would have played baritone I think, I normally play trombone. I ended up working though. My HS marching band was actually pretty good, not stellar, but we had the numbers, 200+ counting only soph/jr/sr, and the commitment. The Frosh marching band was 150 kids just on its own, an a has a medium turnover rate.

OT: Amazing, wish I could have participated in an original show like that. The few shows I've done myself are West Side Story, Chicago, Oldies (Proud Mary, Heard it Through the Grapevine, Mustang Sally and one other I can't recall) and Tribute To America (patriotic songs).

Worst thing I've ever done was marching to Dave Brubeck's Unsquare Dance...never again. If you've heard it, or have marched, you'd realize what a task 7/4 time is.

I tried to convince my band director to let us do a video game show, but without any luck.

We used to play Super Mario Brothers in the stands though and the crowd loved it.

    Nononono....

No way... DCI Drum Corps is nothing compared to college state bands. Not saying that state bands don't work hard... But being thrown into a river with your instrument is kind of childish. The way we were punished however... was pretty different. One time our brass captain missed his relase for the 4th time that night.. Our visual head coach flipped out on him and instead of making him run laps, he made his girlfriend in the colorguard run laps for him instead.

Never missed after that night though.

The Summer of 2002 was easily the best and the worst summer of my life.

But I would give anything, anything to re-live my finals week in DCI.

Rofl, my highschool band was lucky to get 20 kids on the field at once. Really sad. When I graduated I was the ONLY senior in the band. My school wasn't even small either, no body joined the band though.
