Kojima Vs Miyamoto, war of the beasts.

Although there are many outstanding video game designers, when one talks about the subject two names usually come up: Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Mijamoto. In your opinion, who do you think is the one that revolutionized the gaming industry between those two (if you have another you can name it) and why?

Although Miyamoto created some of the most well known franchises (Mario & Zelda), I think Kojima continues to 'evolve' with the technology whereas Miyamoto hasn't. In the end, Miyamoto paved the road for others, but Kojima has challenged others when he designs games where the player actually becomes part of the story; hence, taking it to a whole new level where the player is not just another spectator.

If this has been posted before, feel free to delete it, I'm trying to kill time while I wait for my next class.

If you've read even one of Miyamoto's interviews on upcoming things, you can see just how amazingly deep he is when he thinks of new games and systems to develop. Kojima is a great producer don't get me wrong, but Miyamoto's accomplishments have been and will continue to be felt for decades. Miyamoto if anything evolves more with the technology than Kojima. Kojima knows how to put a player in a game and get them more involved, but Miyamoto is trying to think of new ways to adapt games and systems so they entertain you in new ways. The latter imo as a programmer myself would be a far greater challenge.

If there was no Miyamoto, there would be no video game industry. He wins by defualt.

I don't think even Hideo would vote for himself on this one.

? It's like saying if it weren't for Pong, there wouldn't be Miyamoto. No Beatles no rock. The argument is illogical.

I'm not debating Miyamoto isn't a brilliant game designer, but with Kojima's games take the player to a new, previously unknown level. At least that's how I felt every time I played one of Kijoma's games, not the same experience with the Miyamoto's. I asked this question to a bunch of friends and most have chosen Miyamoto, most don't know who Kojima is. But their answer is usually: "Miyamoto, he came up with Mario and Zelda." I wonder how many of you think the same... And if both were asked this question, neither of them would vote.

You do understand without Miyamoto there would be no MGS, there would be no Playstation.

In before Nintendo is a kids system.

Hideo Kojima's games have much more production value, but I don't think anyone is going to argue against Shigeru's innovative and polished game play. (I voted Kojima just for fun) Gogogo Mario Gear. 8)

edit: gj spelling his name as Mijamoto.

Skimming the first page of the forum I misread the thread title. I am therefore summarily disappointed in this thread's lack of breasts.

I don't know, Boktai 1 seemed pretty standard to me. A lot of fun, but it wasn't exactly an epic experience. Or maybe you're only talking about his popular games.

that's not something we can logically presuppose truth on, so as already mentioned, this is a fallacious argument.

if, say, we were saying something more like "without the atmosphere there would be no life on earth" it would be a logical argument, because that's something science knows as fact. without the atmosphere we'd get owned by tons of asteroids that otherwise burn up in it before reaching the surface of the earth, and we'd get scorched by the suns rays.

one way to check this is that if there were no atmosphere to begin with, life wouldn't have developed on earth to begin with, and if we take away the atmosphere now, life dies out. so we can absolutely say that without that atmosphere, life doesn't exist.

so, can we absolutely say that if Miyamoto wasn't there to begin with, the video game industry wouldn't exist, or if we took him away now, it would die off?

that's like saying without Gates we'd have no home PC. you can't really say that since others were working on the same thing anyway, and there was the whole Apple thing. if you took gates away, doubtless someone eventually would have made it. however, it would be highly probably if someone else made it... it wouldn't be the same.

so that in essence is a more logical statement to make about Miyamoto. "Without miyamoto, the gaming industry wouldn't be the same" and sadly we can make that same statement about quite a few game developers. all had a hand in the evolution of videogames. what we end up doing then is just splitting hairs over who had the bigger impact.

obviously miyamoto had tremendous impact on the direction of the gaming industry, but don't sensationalize things by saying he's the sole reason the industry exists. illogical.

There were interviews with Uematsu, Amano, Sakaguchi, Nomura, Kitase and Nojima at one point; a few were on the FF7AC DVD, some were from past articles, and some from TGS and E3, and they all admitted the same thing I stated (which is why I said it). They basicly said without Miyamoto the industry would not be where it's at today.

and a professor at harvard says if evolution is true, human beings are animals and thus should be able to have sex with any animals we want. so i guess if someone in a position of high standing among peers says something, it's automatically true and couldn't possibly be overstating.

I dunno... I think there'd still be PC games, but whatever. Maybe it just wouldn't get to be called an "industry", because only lonely nerds played games on PCs in 1980, right?

Sony also mentioned during the rise of PS2, that there would have been no PS1 if Nintendo wasnt around. Sony didnt have any thought about joining the gam industry untill they saw how well Nintendo was doing and having no competition.

Bill Gates happened after apple but w/e

this shouldn't even be a debate. if the poll was to say something like, would you rather play Mario3 for the first time again, or MGS1 then it would be really tricky...

    I'd still take Miyamoto

edit@trixi lol nintendo actually co-developed the PSX, but then miyamoto shot it down sayng the load times were too long, but otherwise what you said is true, Nintendo helping them develop that is the only reason they did.
