Ok, FFXi totally sux on my current computer right, tried once and failed so this time im asking for the help of blue gartr people.

    dual core processor
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116249

    motherboard

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814133016

im not looking for EXTREME FFXI play. i just want it to run with above average FPS. Currently my gameplay is around 10-15 fps. about 20fps when soloing. will these new items help out? im not quite sure if the CPU and motherboard are compatible so that'd be great info. im not super rich so im going the cheap way, will cost about 250-300$ for the new stuff.

Switch the mobo to an ASUS, Intel, Gigabyte, or ABIT one and the video card to either an ATI card or an nVidia one made by ASUS or EVGA.

A micro ATX mobo? Try to measure your current mobo if you can. If its bigger than 9.6"x9.6", don't get a micro ATX motherboard as it probably won't fit/screw into your case properly.

Can't really say anything about that video card.

Edit: Or you could tell us how much you have to spend, what you'd like to upgrade/keep, and what the computer be mainly used for. Guess thats a little better starting point.

Skip the Nvidia graphics card and get an ATI if you just gonna play FFXI.. I regret going with an 8800 when I'm playing FFXI 60% of the time.. fucking Nvidia can't fix their drivers or SE has some stupid shit going on..

7300 GS isn't really that great, I bought one to upgrade from a shitty 128mb 5200 and I'm already looking at buying another.

What happens to FFXI on Nvidia's 8800 series cards? I am building a new comp. and was planning on getting a Geforce 8800 GTS 640MBs.

Your vid card isnt gona matter much at all. FFXI runs off of processing power, not your vid card. Ditch your plans on buying a 600$ vid card if all you play is 5+ year old MMO games. If you want the most out of FFXI youll have to buy a beast of a processor. Then you can tweak your registery for FFXI, turn on all effects, and increase your draw distance without loss of framerate.

A cheap vid card today is gona run FFXI the same way an expensive one would.

I know there are FPS issues with those running Vista. I have FPS issues on XP. Pretty much whenever more than 15 show up on the screen, my FPS goes from 29 to 10-15. I highly doubt my processor isn't sufficient.. Core2Duo running at 3.4Ghz.

There are posts on the windower and nvidia forums, and I believe I recall seeing some here before about the issue.

Is this a PC you want to last you a while? because the stuff you're getting isn't going to be compatible with much within the next year even.

No sata, no PCIe and the processor while good enough still won't mach the core 2 duo which costs like 180 bucks more. Nothing particularly wrong with the video card from what i see. 256 seems to be the minimum required for most new graphical games but won't give you pristine quality.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but with the stuff you have listed, you're just gonna need to upgrade again in a year at least if you wanna play anything new.

edit: just saw the post where you said your 300 dollar budget. The stuff you're getting falls into that category, but i can't help but think you'd be better off saving up for a few months more, get like 600-800 bucks then get better parts that'll last you a lot longer.

a good asus mobo is like 200, a core 2 duo like 230 and a good vid card for another 200-400 depending on what you wanna get. throw in decent ram that'll last and you're looking at least in the 700+ minimum. but, you'd be better off doing that, than spending 300 now just for the sake of spending, and another 300+ later whenthis stuff just doesn't cut it anymore.

your mobo and vid card are much better. And the processor should be just fine. I'd still maybe get a tad improved RAM but make sure it's compatible. 1 gig is good enough though nowaday's. only thing you're missing is a cooler for your CPU. It doesn't come with a stock one, and you don't wanna fry your CPU.

Re: New CPU pieces for FFXI

The ones you plan on getting. The mobo is sata and pci express compatible which is what most things are going to be in the future. It's not a 'spectacular blow your mind' motherboard but it'll give you more upgrade flexibility in the future. And a 512 vid card will be good too, it'll last you a good while.

The only thing that mobo is lacking is good fsb speed, but the ram you're getting will be fine for that.
