I joined the new age of technology and bought a DVD burner today. I tried to burn a DVD in nero and imgburn but it will not burn anything under 6x. Id prefer to burn at 2 or 4x. Is the problem the media im using or what?

Why do you want to burn at a slower rate?
Ok, that being said... you can manually lower the burn rate under burn options when you choose to burn a dvd (burn tab, burn speed drop bar, will give you the options your DVD drive supports.)
I know all of that, I'm not a neophyte. The bar only allows for above 6x burns. When I tried it in imgburn, I set the write speed to 2x but still burned at 5.8-6x speeds. I want to burn at a lower rate because you can easily churn coasters burning at high rates. My media is Maxell DVD-R, I used that because I heard it has some of the best dye of DVD media. The packaging said it could burn anywhere between 1x and 16x. My DVD burner is a HP dvd1040.
Weird. I've done ~100 or so DVDs @ 8x, and 0 coasters.
Other than that... just weird.
The DVD actually worked just fine, I'm just afraid that once I try to burn Wii ISO's that it may screw up. Still, the DVD burner is capable of burning at 1x, the CD says 1X, there's no damn reason why it shouldnt give me the damn 1x option.
you are right, burning slower does reduce coasters. i wouldn't lower speed until you actually make your first bad disc, if you have good media and a good burner you might go the entire life of the drive w/o toasting a disc.
and i'm sure its not the media which forces the speed, its the proggie. Could always try other ones, or look in the *gasp* help section of the software
Ive used 2 different pieces of burning software. Imgburn (which i actually set to burn at 2x, but still burned at 6x anyway), and Nero which didnt even give me the option to burn at under than 6x. I could actually select 2x and 4x until I put the disc in the drive, once Nero read the blank disc, it upped my minimum burn speed to 6x, hence me thinking it was a media issue.Originally Posted by evilbau
