Treasure chests available before engaging Ultima

My ls has become quite curious about the treasure chests available to be opened before engaging Ultima. We usually end up killing him with a decent amount of time left so we began to wonder if its possible to get limbus chips and af+1 items out of the chests. I did a BG search and came up with one thead from 2005 and I will quote the pertinent information:

    viewtopic.php?f=24&t=5894&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=ult ima+treasure+chest&start=30

We opened one... an enhanced pygmaoi spawned, was rather weak but had a TON of HP (took the alliance of 18 that later beat Ultima around 5 minutes to kill it) - it dropped 2 coins
We just did Proto-Ultima BC and opened the chests!

The chests appear to work in the following manner (theory from what we saw):
    There are 3 sets of chests - A, B, C
Opening one in a set makes the others of that set disappear
    7 chests in set A
    6 chests in set B
    3 chests in set C

Set A seems to have the XP mobs slime, pugil etc - we fought slime
Set B seems to be avatars - we fought leviathan (named Mystic Avatar)
Set C seems to be beastmen gods - we fought a Quadav
(In set B, it might only be one chest, but random avatar)

This would seem to explain what was discussed in the Missing Temenos Monsters thread. After opening 3 of the chests, we did not find anymore and moved on to Proto-Ultima. All of them only dropped coins for us, not sure what else is possible (like maybe chips from a temenos?)

We were able to kill the monsters with ~50mins remaining.
I was wondering if anyones ls has new updated information on this topic or have they just been avoided for the past 2 years? Our main questions are 1. Is it 100% mob or can some chests just hold coins/items/chips? 2. If so do the mobs share alliance hate? Our logic behind this is if they do disappear once you pop once chest and its a monster let the chest popper die and do not waste time killing the mob for a few coins. Either way we're hoping to gather some more information on this subject so any information is appreciate, thanks in advance.

Re: Treasure chests available before engaging Ultima

Each chest corresponds to one of three types of monsters found in Temenos areas: Beasts, Beastmen, and Elementals.
Once a chest of a particular type of monster has been opened, others of the same type will disappear.
Instead of spawning a monster, there is a chance that it may be a regular item chest.
Thanks, figures I search BG and KI and dont even consider ffxiclopedia even though I use that 50x a day for random crap. But any first hand knowledge on how often its items vs. mobs is appreciated.

Re: Treasure chests available before engaging Ultima

Generaly, one random chest will contain no mobs, and just drop coins, af+1 items, or chips. For my ls, it's generally off the beastmen one, although we have gotten it on the avatar one.

I can't say for sure if a chip drops, we've never gotten one, but it would seem likely seeing as Omega Gunpods do.

And you guys seriously take that long to kill the mobs? We usually have all 3 dead by the 50 minute mark.

Do the chests remain after Ultima is dead? You could always save them for later if you're worried about budgeting time.

Last time we tried opening, we got an Enhanced Slime that managed to kill every mage due to overnuking and Fluid Spread. Next we got Shiva who provided us with an instant and complete alliance wipe despite Shell IV, Barblizzard, and Stoneskin. Yay 30 minutes for Ultima...

    1. Ya we sort of figured the chests made up for the gunpods so they most likely had a chance to drop coins/af+1/chips items. We normally farm the gunpods whichi s why we were curious about this.

    2. No, we've never opened a chest so we had no definite information on how hard the mobs were :D

Re: Treasure chests available before engaging Ultima

Our group has always popped those chests before going on to Ultima.

    1. Is it 100% mob or can some chests just hold coins/items/chips?

    * Just as in that description, there are three 'sets' of chests.
    * Each set has the chance that - the one that you picked - will give only coins and not spawn a mob.
    * If you got the coins-only chest from that set, then you got lucky since those will, on average, drop one or two more coins than if you had fought the mob.
    * We have never received any AF+1 Synthesis Material from those chests regardless of coins-only or coins+mob.

    2. If so do the mobs share alliance hate? Our logic behind this is if they do disappear once you pop once chest and its a monster let the chest popper die and do not waste time killing the mob for a few coins.

    * Don't know about alliance hate.
    * It takes about 10 minutes to kill all three popped mobs if you were unlucky all three times.
    * If you're having doubts about it, then you should skip the avatar one since a badly-timed or randomly-strong Astral Flow can hurt.

    3. But any first hand knowledge on how often its items vs. mobs is appreciated.

    From the wiki:
    # Enhanced Koenigstiger
    # Enhanced Pygmaioi
    # Enhanced Kettenkaefer (Beetle)
    # Enhanced Salamander (Raptor)
    # Enhanced Jelly
    # Enhanced Makara
    # Enhanced Akbaba

    # Kingslayer Doggvdegg (Orc)
    # Ji'Gho Ageless (Quadav)
    # Koo Buzu the Theomanic (Yagudo Summoner)

    # Mystic Avatar of random type.
8 chests from Animal Set (only 7 mobs in the pop list)
4 chests from Beastmen Set (only 3 mobs - ocr, quadav, yagudo - in the pop list)
9 chests from Avatar Set (only 8 mobs in the pop list - 6 elemental avatars + carby + fenrir)

    8 + 4 + 9 = 21 chests

    From the wiki:
There are about 20 Armoury Crates out at the beginning. Opening one causes others nearby to disappear, and can either give items or spawn a monster.
Looks like one chest in each set will be coins-only.

(Edited - I remembered there being 8 chests in the two south rooms, not 7. Changed "7 chests from Animal Set")
(Edited - I don't remember ever popping Fenrir though, so maybe only 7 mobs in the pop list for Avatar Set?)

AF+1 definitely drops there, we always get it.

The mobs aren't too hard, they're weaker than the boss monsters in the advanced Temenos zones.

Usually takes 10 minutes at most to kill mobs/pop all of the chests.

Oh, something else I'd like to add:

    * I don't remember ever seeing either af+1 synthesis materials or temenos chips drop from these chests.
    * After looking closely at the map on the wiki, it seems to me that there should only be 7 chests from th eAvatar Set and not 8. This means that Fenrir is probably not on the pop list.

Are you sure about that? Maybe I'm not remembering it right, but I just don't recall ever seeing any AF+1 materials drop from any mobs that we've ever popped from those chests.

One of our whm got the Temenos whm AF+1 piece from the beastmen chests here on one of our runs, so I can definitely confirm that it's possible to get those items.

Re: Treasure chests available before engaging Ultima

There are 3 sets of chests.

I'm pretty sure each chest always spawns the same mob, unless it's the "free" chest.

1 Set of regular mobs (pugils, slimes, beetles).
2.Set of Beastman NM (Yag SMN, Quad WHM, Orc PLD)
    3.Set of Avatar

1 of Each set is a "free" chest. This can be coins, or chips, or AF materials.
The rest of the chests are their respective mobs.

Has anyone tried going back for the chests after finishing Ultima but before popping the final chest? Seems much safer in terms of time. Bad luck on Ultima is unavoidable sometimes.

Re: Treasure chests available before engaging Ultima

I really don't see how a well organized, intelligent, and experienced group of 12+ will need more than 30-40 minutes to kill him. On our first attempts we took him down in about ~50 minutes with a full alliance, but lately we can take him down with 14 people or so in about 40, so we always grab the chests and finish with still a good 10 minutes left.

The only thing you really need to be concerned about is that the AF from the avatars is very strong and will usually kill at least 1 person unless you prepare properly. There's a temenos-ramp which can be used to block the AOE on the mages at least, that's a big help.

Your linkshell's first few runs, leave the chests, after that, may as well hit 'em.

And even if everyone does get killed from AF, it only takes 5-7 min to recover from a full alliance wipe, not 30. Unless, of course, people don't use RR.

They definately drop coins and AF+1 items. I have never seen any Chips drop. It doesn't take long to kill the mobs if you get them. We always pop all three, takes us maybe 10m to kill all three and get ready for Ultima. Sometimes people die, no big deal, plenty of time to recover and start Ultima.

Last Ultima yielded us a chest with coins and MNK+WHM af+1 items, it was from the beastmen set.
