    Bonds just hit 756

Le sigh... Oh well, hopefully only 10 or more years or so, until A Rod passes him.

Just for the record, NO ONE hits their prime in their late 30s. He never hit more than 50 home runs before his 73 home run year when he was ~37-38.

If any of you are Bonds supporters, get over your denial and realize he cheated, and that baseball history will see him that way. It is clear that Bud Selig and Hank Aaron feel that way. Lol @ the fake Congrats from Hank Aaron after the home run.

In other news, he has always sucked in the playoffs, and couldn't throw out the slowest man in baseball in 1992 when he was actually in his prime.

    GG.

The most you can say about the guy, is that in an era of rampant steroid abuse, he was one of the best hitters...or something.

They'll be an Astrix by his name on any record, won't there?

Everyone in baseball cheated. The game was tainted long before Bonds and will be long after. Congratulations none the less.

That'd be the one nice thing. I can't deny that.

And I'm sorry but Hank Aaron was not a cheater, steroids were not around then. He never hit more than 50 home runs in his career in a season.

As un-PC as it is, a editorial in the paper last week said Bond's breaking the Home Run record will be viewed by the world the same way Gay Marriage is to Republicans.

He hit 47 or 48 as a member of the Braves in 1970?

    Edit:
(just checked on year it was 1971 and he hit 47 ^^ then he hit 45 in 1962 )

Sorry guess I meant to say never hit more than 50. Are those the only 2 times he hit more than 40 though?

Not to imply that Aaron cheated, but he did play in the Greenie era. To assume a single player didn't cheat while playing a sport with over a hundred years of cheating history is a little naive. For the record, I personally don't think Aaron cheated, but I certainly can't say that he did or didn't definitively.

Bonds, as anyone that has read Game of Shadows probably thinks, cheated. That book was enough to convince me, and as a result I don't much care for Bonds' hopefully short-lived record. Alex Rodriguez is on pace, barring injury, to hit 800 home runs somewhere in the 7-8 year range.

As a funny side note: If anyone is a fan of Baseball Prospectus, you may recall their number crunching that estimated Babe Ruth's home run total at about 900 if he played during the same years as Bonds.

    Either way, it wasn't a ridiculous 70+.

No just checked, he had quite a few 40-44 homerun seasons.

Good points all around Viq. Also, some speculate that Josh Gibson (Negro Leagues) hit over 1000 career home runs, but as I said, the majority was in the Negro Leagues.

Rodriguez is more on pace in 10 or so years I'd say. 8 years minimum. He is 32 currently, and is the youngest to 500 in history by about 200-250 days. If he averages 30 a year for 10 more years, obviously there is 800. I just hope he realizes how realistic the home run record is to him and plays until he gets it, so we can get that asteric (sp?) down to #2. It just makes me sad because this really feels tainted seeing him up there over the 'feel good' historic figures.

@ what Xav said: Especially when he never hit more than 50 ever before in his career. And again to repeat, he was in his late 30s, no one peaks at that age, lol @ that.

I don't think you can ever really trust another record again in baseball, at least not for a while, its too tainted right now. It was so wide-spread and accepted by players that everyone is suspect.

    Re: Bonds just hit 756

Bonds has a career .936 OPS in the postseason. He had sucked in the postseason, then he had an utterly ridiculous 2002 postseason to salvage his career numbers. His numbers are much better than, say, noted postseason hero Derek Jeter's. He was the best player of the 90s, even though the general public's poor understanding of the value of a walk led to Griffey often being called it. Furthermore, steroids are not some utterly unique challenge to sports today. As previously stated, "greenies" have been in baseball for decades and Aaron has admitted to using them, and cheating in baseball has a long and storied tradition. Players today have access to technological advances (Steroids, Lasik) that were not available in Aaron's day, just as players in Aaron's day didn't have to worry about dying of tuberculosis.

Anyway, Bonds is a true asshole who plays for a shitty team, so trash him all you want, but also give him his due for being an incredible ballplayer.

That is exactly where I stand also more or less. This thing is much bigger than Bonds, is there any record you can really trust right now? Well I mean besides Dimaggio and that insanely retarded hitting streak.... and Cal and that 2k+ games consecutive.....

I'd add Gagne's consecutive converted saves to the short list of meaningful records.
