Sometimes if you view the properties of the movie it will tell you what codec is required in order to play it. If that doesn't work I'd just use VLC media player, or download a codec pack and hope the one you need is in there somewhere. I used http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...k_All_in_1.htm and it worked gewd for me.

Also go to divx.com and download their codecs. The massive majority of digital media uses a divx codec, so even if that video doesn't use it chances are there will be one in your near future.

VLC media player plays any type of media, no matter what codec, get it.

Wrong. It can only play what libavcodec has plus some other odd formats.

Whatever, I'm not picky. If there's something I don't have a codec for, I put it in VLC and it plays. Find me a format well used that doesn't play in VLC and I'll give up.

I'll give you the one about MPEG-4..but all those other ones are ones I've never heard of apart from Bink, which is mostly used in games anyway.

The ones I mentioned are most commonly used in HD DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs.

Fair enough, but probably less than 5% of people use those compared to other formats, so in most cases VLC player will do.

Out of curiosity, what would you use to play Blu-ray discs or HD DVD discs?

WMP but I demux the VC-1 or H.264/MPEG-4 AVC streams (and audio) then reencode it with x264 into an .mkv file.
