Extreme FFXI lag

I've been having some really, really bad lag in FFXI/POL since the last update on Monday. Nothing on my PC has changed, it's just when I startup POL, all my CPU suddenly gets chomped up. I've looked through my PC, and found out that svchost.exe is the culprit, but it doesn't do much of anything until I boot up POL. The second I log into FFXI, it jumps from consuming no CPU, to the top of the list.

Any ideas? Or am I screwed?

Check your services. Svchost.exe is the "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services."

Start with some spyware scans using Lavasoft Adaware (update -> full scan, then reboot in safe mode and running again a full scan) then using Spy-Bot Search and destroy (same deal). Both available free on http://www.cnet.com/downloads.
