Changing Nations

I originally joined the Bastok army. When talking to some NPCs around Sandy one of them gave me the option to renounce my Bastokian ties so I could join the Sand'orian army. Now here's my question. Has anyone done this? I'd assume it would be like changing nations in the present, where you would just stay on the mission you're currently on and all...but what happens to your Allied Notes/medals you've accumulated?

I really don't want to find out that you lose them all if you switch nations. I'd like to see all the storylines without being penalized like in the present nations.

As far as I've been able to tell, the storylines are completely separate from the Campaign gameplay, a la Aht Urhgan with Assault and the storyline being seperate. The storyline quests can be triggered as long as you're signed up with -a- country's army, it doesn't matter which one, so there's no real reason to switch unless you decided you don't like your first choice.

What about the gear for each nation? I'm in the Q_Q PC user club, so I can't be sure, but I'm pretty sure the Cobra/Fourth/Griffonorwhatever sets are exclusive to that nation, and purchased with Allied Notes? I don't recall them being any good, but maybe there's one or two standout pieces that could affect someone's choice of allegiance.
