    Jury Duty

anyone served recently? or have a story you'd like to tell? or currently serving and looking to receive some perjury charges?

I just finished a 3-day 1st degree robbery + lethal weapon case. I have to grab a nap right now because of work tonight, but if there is interest, I'll write up what i remember (I have a good memory). thought I'd toss a probe out in the meantime.

    Re: Jury Duty

I'm kinda interested in what it's like. I got called in once but they dismissed me before making it to trial (it was a 19 year old on trial, defense dismissed me and 2 other young guys) but I'm kinda interested in it. How was it?

    Re: Jury Duty

I've only ever been summoned (weird word to use, I know) by the judicial system once. It was Dec. 26th and thankfully they just let all of us go because it was some sort of booking error. Weeeee!

Actually, about a month ago I got my second selection notice in two years. My state's laws fortunately restrict service to one every three years though, so I won't be serving this time around.

    Re: Jury Duty

Little tip for those looking to get out of jury duty, when you are summoned don’t accept the date they give you. Pick a different date that falls right before a holiday. 90% of the time judges want to get out early before a holiday so they will fly through the process (better then being stuck there all day) or just cancel it all together. And for anyone in CT that gets summoned, lol I’m sorry I’m just doing my job. Kind of funny to be going through the list and seeing your own name.

    Re: Jury Duty

I had a jury duty notice in the mail a few years back. I took off work and drove to the courthouse only to find out they canceled it. I guess it all worked out fine since I got a free day off work and still got paid for it, haha.

Slightly off-topic story on lucking out of trips to court..

Back in 2001 I got pulled over for hydroplaning thru a red light, and the cop noticed my license had expired the month before. Bastard gave me a ticket for both with a summons (expired license in CT is serious business).

My court date - 9/11/01. Yeeeah. Was there for three hours before they sent us all home without hearing a single case.

well... it's south dakota. can't you just park in an adjacent cow-field and walk the 30 meters to the court house?

iirc here in minneapolis it's 35 bucks per day or something, been a long time.

    Re: Jury Duty

I have never served jury duty, yet....and quite possibly never will.

I've been summoned 3 times, and all 3 times ive been dismissed by the defense.

Go into the "hearings"....defense lawyers ask you a bunch of questions, and then the great question always pops up "Do you know anyone connected to this case" and everytime, I raise my hand saying "Yes, I know the officers who made the arrest.....real nice guys/ladies"

and I pretty much get a evil glare from the defense, and told to GTFO!

    lol

    Re: Jury Duty

I got Jury duty last year I think, possibly the year before that. It was a woman in Virginia who was up for murdering her five children, she was claiming the whole postpartum depression thing. We got all the way through jury selection (I made it) and the next day she turned around and took a deal. Five life sentences without the death penalty, I believe it was.

I wouldn't mind being summoned if they could literally draw a summoning circle and warp me in from home.

I got summoned, which meant I had to call into the LA county courthouse every day for 5 days in the evening to see if I had to come in the next day. I told work that my schedules had to be tentative (I was working on Extreme Makeover at the time) and called in all 5 days - I never had to come in and that was the extent of my duty.

Here you can choose either to do the call in thing, or pick 1 day in a given week to go sit for a day then you're done.

I was called in once, sat in the waiting room, had my name called and entered the courtroom. I followed an excuse by another guy that also pertained to me and was dismissed before I even heard what the case was about. Pretty boring

My dad has sat on a jury before where this bitch and her husband were trying to sue a hotel for "making the floor too slippery in the bathroom" because apparently she fell down Fortunately that didn't work out for the couple.
