I need a new headset/pair of headphones!

my sister is a bitch. she whines and whines about my subwoofer to my awsome pc stereo.

to shut her up, my dad has agreed to buy me some headphones of my choice(I.E. something better than i have now, to shut my sister the fuck up.)

so... i come to you, technical support! im looking for something REALLY nice, but i'd like the cost to still be modest.

I go through headsets every few months. Even more lately because my 6 month old lab puppy seems to think they're some kind of awesome chew toy and nibbles on the wire while I talk on vent.

Get a real set instead. You might want to pick up an amp for the 600's though. If you want cheaper, I wholeheartedly endorse either the HD280 that Sennheiser makes, or a pair of Grado cans.

I wanted portable headphones, so I did a lot of review hopping and ended up picking Sennheiser PMX 60s. They sound better than their price range ought to allow, and are apparantly a mere $30 on Amazon now. They do have a really short cord though, so you probably want something better for the computer...

You always pay for extra features, so I agree with going for higher quality sound over "surround sound" headphone setups.

Just ordered a new Headset myself, it better be amazing for the price. Got a Sennheiser PC350 for $180.97 off the normal $249.99 price. I cant wait to get it, hoping for something amazing if its anything near what the reviews for it are like.

Just so you know, there's no such thing as an audiophile grade headset. The sennheiser top-end headsets seem to be the best in the market, but apparently this is just as good as them: http://www.astrogaming.com/equipment/index/ct/3/id/3 . Those will also give you dolby headphone, dolby digital encoding to for surround sound.

Now if you're willing to get normal headphones rather than a headset, there was a thread earlier with a lot of discussion about high-end headphones. Basically go to http://www.head-fi.org/forums and browse for info on the Sennheiser HD650, Sennheiser HD600, Sennheiser HD595, Beyerdynamic DT-770, AKG K701, Ultrasone HFI-780, Ultrasone Pro 750. Of course I'm missing some other top tier headphones, but I can't think of all of them off the top of my head. You can get a pair of good headphones and pair it up with something like the A40 Mixer or the JVC SH-DU1 to get dolby headphone surround. A40 mixer also has some nice options when using third party PC mics as well for both PC games and Xbox 360.

You said PC stereo, and are concerned about surround sound, so I assume you're mostly using them for gaming, but also some music?

Quite a good set. Cord is plenty long, only goes into one ear (trust me, this makes a difference), and is detachable; driver response is accurate yet powerful, which lends quite well to games and music alike. How 'surround' it sounds will be entirely up to how capable your PC sound drivers are.

Ultimately, your ears are what make all the difference. If you can go someplace that has a lot of different models available for demo use (music stores or home theater stores often do), do so. Find something that sounds good to your ears. All the technical details in the world can't make up for what your ears tell your brain.

Whatever you decide to get, make sure and burn them in (http://www.burninwave.com/, download ultra frequency sweep and 1 hour silence files and put them in a repeating playlist so that the ultra sweep plays for 5 hours followed by 1 hour silence) if you want to get the best performance out of them (though it means going for about a week or more precisely 100 hours total without being able to use them; if this doesn't appeal to you, just keep in mind that they may sound cheap or artificial for the first month or so that you use them).

This is the correct answer. And seriously LOL at surround sound headphones, its just a gimmick.

Also didn't we just have a topic about headphones in the General forums not too long ago maybe a couple weeks at the most? I think the general consensus from that thread is that if you are serious about sound and you want the advice of the audiophiles that read this board most of us agreed Sennheiser or Grado were the best brands for headphones.
