The last thread is over a year old, I'd rather just make a new one. (I need to vent)

Vayne Solidor of FFXII. Does no one share my love of Vayne? Everything he says and does in the Bahamut is completely bad ass. All of his battle animations, the hand-to-hand combat, the flying sword, the fucking wings and especially his battle saying, "What am I to do with those who would oppose me, but show them death." Never before has a video game given me the adrenalin rush that I experience when taking on Vayne.

As a villain, his motivation is the most believable and realistic in a Final Fantasy to date. It is hard to label him as just a villain, because he fought to the death for what he believed was the right thing to do, not for him, not for his country, but for all of humanity. With his military genius and his indomitable might, he sacrificed countless lives, a kingdom, and his family to perfect a weapon that could free humanity from the manipulative grasp of the undying 'gods'. He eventually succeeds in making the gods irrelevant, but the destruction he leaves in his path is what catches up to bring him down. He is a villain to our party, for greatly affecting their lives, but in the larger picture he is the hero of the story, he ensures that man will no longer be controlled by the gods. It's just a shame that he won't be around to see what comes about from his struggle.

Vayne was too easy a boss. though maybe that was just cause I was like level 70.
I always liked villains who just liked chaos.
So, Kefka wins my vote.

Kefka was a much better villain than sephiroth. Infact sephiroth was the weakest of all the FF final bosses, he just wanted to fuse with the earth's energy and become a god, all the other final bosses wanted to undo the universe and return it all to nothingness.

Nyarlethotep from Persona 2

Played as a "behind the scenes" villain and didn't come out till about 3/4's of the game and you still didn't know who he truly was. He manipulated the events (such as the resurrection of Adolf Hitler) Innocent Sin and paved the way for Eternal Punishment. I don't want to give out any more spoilers than that though, you can try to figure out who he is while you play the game.

Just a warning this one contains major spoilers if you haven't played Suikoden II.


Man everyone should know by now why I included him. His thirst for blood, immortal and godly like presence. I love how they made you form 3 multiple parties for this battle. Though of course if you power level you can easily beat him, but when I played through for the first time I barely killed him, and when you have that epic dual I love the way they still make him seem godly when you are squaring off and he is still so damn insanely powerful. Every line up to his death was just fucking win, this was the person I thought would be the last boss of Suikoden II but I was wrong and was pretty shocked he wasn't.

Hands down, Luca Blight. Kefka wanted to rule the world, not destroy it, and he achieved his goal. He's my 2nd favorite. But nobody outdoes Luca Blight for my money.

That's such an awful argument...How can you say X is better than Y, when you dumb down the plot this way. Comparing a snes rpg to a psx one feel wrong anyway. There is such a huge step in storytelling between those 2 consoles.


Anyway, best villains for me would be Albedo in Xenosaga. I liked Vayne a lot too, especially for his speech early in the game.

Definitely Kefka. He wasn't just a typical bad guy, but he seemed more genuinely bad. He killed the Emperor, destroyed half of the world, and brought total chaos upon everyone. Kefka actually went through with his plan and was a total badass about it.

Also, not an RPG, but Ben from Lost. I love watching that guy lie and squirm his way to what he wants.

Cloud of Darkness, Neo Exdeath, Seymour (well, the world for him). Although you might not count the first 2 as main villains but more as final bosses.

Anyway, I like Exdeath a lot. There's just something badass about him (it?). Oh, and of course Kefka.

Sephiroth

The way he cruelly broke down Cloud in the Crater was fantastic. And the two images that I think of first when I think FF:

1) Sephiroth standing in the flames
2) Sephiroth tearing the mask off Jenova

I have to disagree. A story is a story, it doesn't matter as much if there is prettyful graphics to go with it unless you're easily amused. Look at all the Kefka choosers after all (and Luca Blight even though I haven't played it yet, just seen footage).


Kefka does deserve nomination as my choice. But I'd like to take a second to look a bit beyond the powerful towards more those who have charisma in a way and constant persistance that we have seen for so long.

There are many games out there that may be like this but the two that have gotten to me with their unending persistance would be King Bowser and Dr. Wily. I don't know how these guys have the motivation to keep going trying different methods (more so Bowser than Wily) to be able to gain "rule" and yet constantly end up defeated. One of the most intense final battles was Bowser in Paper Mario 1. Intense music with the constant peril of being able to defeat his newfound power in different scenes.

I rather like Pokey (Porky in JPN) from the Mother series as a villian as well. He reminds me of Kefka a lot in many ways but without the "almighty power" and more of "influencing" those around him to get what he wants.

There are a lot of great villians out there that I can't name right now and most of the ones mentioned here are definitely noteworthy. It seems easier to create a good villian than it is a hero nowadays.

Kefka sure did kill a lot of people and destroy a lot of life. But he did what he set out to do: Rule the world. He wanted the taste of power infinite and betrayed his emperor to get it. How many villains truly succeed in their goal? He rearranged the world in his distorted image.
