I can't remember exactly what happened. But remember the episode where the doctor, Rose and Micky (or whoever that black guy was) accidently went to another dimension where Rose's father was still alive? If not, it doesnt matter much. The point is they went to another dimension. There was also a lot of Cybermen in that dimension too.

At some point the cybermen broke through into our dimension (one of the season finales), and some people from the other dimension came through too. Turns out jumping between the dimensions is bad so they can't do it much. The doctor saves Rose by making her jump into the other dimension, where she gets stuck and can't return.

Re: Doctor Who series 4 (contains spoilers)

I'd have to re watch the entire series to make sure I was correct on everything, so I'll go with Rose for now.

SPOILERS: If you haven't seen this episode and do not wish it spoiled for you, do not read!
(Yes I know it's between out for a while, but some people still have yet to watch it >.> )

The Doctor and Rose return to Earth and there's "ghosts" popping up everywhere, which is caused by Torchwood opening a hole in a spatial breach created by a void ship. Cybermen from the parallel Earth used the breach to invade Torchwood and secretly convert Torchwood members to Cybermen. The void ship opens up to reveal 4 Daleks, the Cult of Skaro, who have the Genesis Ark. The Ark is a Time Lords prison ship containing hundreds of Daleks (Think Tardis, small outside, big inside). Rose's father, Mickey and the resistance group travel from parallel Earth to warn them of the invasion, albeit a bit late. They offer to return to the paralllel Earth with Rose and her mother, but Rose refuses and stays with the Doctor to help. Since they used the breach to travel between worlds, the Daleks, Cybermen, the Doctor and Rose, everyone is covered in void particles. This allows the Doctor to reverse the breach, sucking in everything covered in particles and sealing them in the void, his plan works, the Daleks and Cybermen being sucked into the breach, but Rose loses grip and is about to be lost forever when her father travels back, catches her and returns to the parallel Earth. The breach seals, which prevents Rose or the Doctor from reuniting.

Sorry if it seem long winded, I tried to make it short as possible :ashira:

Do these new 4 seasons have much of a relation to the older seasons? Can I start watching them without reading up on the older season plots or does it help to know a bit of a background.

You can probably just start watching. Would be useful to watch the 2006 Christmas special though. I think the only main thing you'd need to know is this spoiler, which has probably already been spoiled. Rose, one of his previous companions who was trapped in another dimension, turns up.

Edit: As for watching series 4. Try the BBC iPlayer site. I posted a link in a previous post. If that doesn't work then I don't know. Episodes are only up on BBC site for a week after the episode is shown on TV.

The 2006 special is after the first of the new seasons so does the special not follow the time line set by the new series? How would it be an introductory if its after the first new season.

The 2006 special just explains how he met Donna, his companion in series 4.

I would still recommend watching the show in order, the rose storyline is just amazing.

Or if you want to see the heights to which this show can get, watch the episode "Blink," it has no bearing to the normal storyline and is just awesome.

Fun Fact: Doctor Who is the longest running series on TV, with episodes having been gracing the screens since the 1960's.

    Wrong

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guiding_Light

15,000 episodes, and started as a radio program back in freaken 1937 before going to tv in 1952.

You also need to consider the like 15 year break that Who took, which makes it like 29 seasons total, which a lot of shows have beat.

I shat bricks seeing Rose. Of course, I knew two or three seconds after looking at the color of her highlights, but who else wouldn't? I love how where most episodes are written to have a huge emotional celebration at the end. It makes me all :nikkei: inside.
