    Aureanis (Calford)

Joined a nyzul static that was short a member last night on Alexander. They all agreed to pick a specific gear drop and only lot that. Aureanis chose Askar. Denali dropped and the only lotter lotted very low. So Aureanis lotted once everyone else passed.

I am told he is also known as Calford and has been listed on forums under that name as someone that will rip you off. I am unsure if he changed names or has another character, or if he came from another server to Alexander. But I have not seen or heard of Aureanis until he did this.

Thanks for the information. I'll make note not to trust this person. Might draw more attention to put the server name in the topic title though so if people browse through looking for anyone on their server. D:

why this happened : my side of the story

    Hello, this is Aureanis.

Yes, I also play as Calford and Aureontaru. As far as I know, my accounts have always been on Alexander since the day I made an Elvaan in December 2003. No cross-server stuff involved with me.

Hello Bairrionn or whoever is posting for him. I'm here to clarify exactly under what conditions I made the mistake of lotting those denali legs. Just a little background check on myself in case you & anyone else are curious.

First of all, Calford is an account I inherited from a friend, who had also inherited the account from the original Calford. Perhaps this claim or these claims on other forums that Calford has ripped people off, which really has no relevance to Ninja lotting on Aureanis anyway, referred to some previous owner of the account. I personally have never tried to rip someone off, I think that's a waste of time, besides being just stupid. Rather, I have done the opposite, in selling gear at a discounted price to friends, because I'd rather not lose gil to the auction house.

My former account was Aureon. Just gotta brag but, if you were a part of the endgame scene on Alexander (2004-2006) when the linkshell I was a part of- named "Sleep" and thereafter RootBeer & Reflect- was the first NA-only linkshell to defeat Kirin (I finished him off with a repeating crossbow, holy bolt, with a heavy shot WS for like 130 dmg) and osode dropped; Mugoo received that first osode), or if you were on the scene when my linkshell was the first NA linkshell to defeat King Behemoth, then you might recognize me. I was a part of such history on this server. But not many people nowadays know about those achievements, because three other linkshells have proven themselves more elite. Ironically, Reznap is the leader of one such shell. Reznap was a member of Reflect. I thought he was just another silly PLD, but he has proven me wrong since.

Well, just to cap things off about my former linkshell shameless plug, we would also go on to be the first NA linkshell to defeat all 3 kings of zilart, as well as Tiamat, before I quit for two years. Our LS was the first NA-only linkshell doing sky, and we were lucky enough not to have much JP competition at all during our scheduled days, so we basically farmed it at will. Lastly, I believe me and my 5 linkshell members who rushed through CoP were the first NA to get the rings as well.

Anyway, my point is, I have a long and somewhat successful history of doing really annoying things on FFXI for items that aren't quite worth the time and effort. I've had countless chances to Ninja lot something that I really don't need for myself... and the Denali Legs, unfortunately, is my first case of Ninja lotting, ever, period. I'd like now to mention that it was not in the context everyone has inevitably come to believe it to be.

I hope you will consider the following in light of what I have done to piss some people off and perhaps then reconsider whatever you think of me now, and hopefully you will trust me again to do nyzul with, should we ever cross paths in a random shout party.

First, I cannot defend myself with the ridiculous statement that it was me hosting the run, because it was Hustle who shouted and brought the group together. I clearly stated and certainly desired the Askar pants. Denali pants I could care less about, even though it is a decent piece for using Ninjutsu with on Aureanis' 75 Ninja, and also as a fill-in legpiece since Aureanis does not have Byakko's Haidate, my reason for lotting Askar and of course my whole reason for joining the run in the first place. Denali legs is a decent piece for 75 RNG as well if you are not doing dynamis San d'Oria for AF2 or mamool ja assault for pahluwan, both of which I have not been doing.

I assume Bairrionn wanted the kecks for his Thief, Rng or for his BLU, if he has those last two leveled. Personally, I wouldn't mind if someone Ninja lotted a pair of Denali Kecks if I still had my old Aureon account which had THF and RNG leveled, and if I had wanted the pants in the first place.

I think Bairrionn may agree with me if this is the case. There are better pieces, namely Hecatomb Subg, to WS in with Thief. However, if he does have BLU leveled, then I can understand that the leg piece was pretty good for a BLU, and it really was a regrettable loss. At this point, I can only ask that he does not let my mistake define my character. Honest mistakes serve to better one's character, and I assume those who have heard about what I did on Aureanis presently believe I did not make an honest mistake. So I ask you to reconsider your judgments after reading this:

    ...

I just looked at the "nyzul initial findings" thread in the strategies forum and discovered something I would like to share with anyone who has not read some of the latest replies in that particular thread as of the time I posted this:

This refers to Nyzul Isle, of course.

People (CreamSoda in this case) have discovered that if you find yourself about to timeout on an item, with either 1. not enough time to lot/pass or 2. dead people without rr on, who refuse to homepoint with no time to be raised, then you have the option of disconnecting yourself before mission failure occurs. When you log back in, (I'm guessing if multiple people do it, then the first person to log back in will be applicable for this) you will receive the item that dropped before the game kicks you out of nyzul.

Why does this matter, you ask? Because in this particular Nyzul40 run I attended, our group defeated an Adamantoise boss just as the ten second warning showed up on our logs. Hell, I didn't even think that we were going to beat him, much less that he'd drop anything other than that godammn PUP weapon or yet another COR weapon.

After all, just a mere 10 seconds ago, we were chasing after an ungravitied Adamantoise, who still had 3% HP left, who was bent on eating our Tarutaru RDM (i believe this was Hustle) that had just pulled hate with cures.

When I thought Adamantoise and Hustle had stopped, I hit my Gekko macro, and unfortunately, the turtle was still running, so I lost the chance to kill it.
I thought none of the other DDs had enough to take 3% off Adamantoise with 15 seconds left and leave us with enough time to pass and lot the item. But to my surprise, Hustle stopped, Adamantoise stopped, and someone did kill it off.

I fumbled to look at the treasure pool and saw Denali, and was about to say gratz to Bairrionn, when I realized our Paladin, Damagedperson, was with no sense of irony, dead on the floor. Personally, after having done Nyzul 1-100 on someone else's disc before SE made the change that all discs were updated, I never faced this situation we had until I lost a pair of askar gloves just a day or two before. The only thought in my mind was that, "we could have avoided aggro here, and done lamps faster, etc etc." The usual crap people lament about after failing a nyzul. I believed the item was going to be lost, I couldn't see any way out of it.

But sometimes people surprise you in this game. I was just as surprised to hear about the d/c trick as I was surprised when I lotted 979 on the Denali I didn't need, and I was gravely surprised when Damagedperson not only homepointed, but everyone else had already lotted or passed the item BEFORE Damagedperson homepointed, therefore leaving him/her to decide the fate of the item we received. Damagedperson managed to homepoint mere seconds before mission failure.

Unfortunately for me, because I had lotted higher (and also was one of the first to cast lots, if not the first) than Bairrionn's 600 something and I think someone else's 100 something, and because everyone else had passed, Denali legs fell into my inventory in the process. What was going through my mind as I lotted the pants and didnt stop to pass? I thought at the least if everyone besides lotted or passed with Damagedperson dead, there was a small chance that the item may drop, and better that it drops to someone who can use the item, rather than losing the item altogether.

In this respect, again, I'd like to point out that a recent post on the "Nyzul Initial Findings" thread has someone stating that there was a run they did in which they think not all people passed or lotted the item, but despite this, the item still managed to drop into someone's inventory. My experience with the Askar hands conflicts with this. This is only a minor point with some relevance.

Another issue I was faced with as Adamantoise died, was that I could not realize in time that Damagedperson was going to homepoint. He/she never mentioned the idea during the minute or two he/she was lying dead on the floor, with nothing to do but watch us try to finish the boss off. If one intends to homepoint for the sake of the drops, one could very well say so within a minute. Communication is very important in Nyzul, after all.

But I'd like to get off the blame train now and assume that Damagedperson is just as vexed as I am about the whole ordeal. I assume he/she only considered homepointing after seeing that some armor did indeed drop, and didn't quite consider homepointing in the case that nothing dropped. That would be understandable. Not knowing whether we are going to kill the mob or not with seconds left on the clock is reason enough to hesitate homepointing.

Had he/she communicated the intent to homepoint, I would have without a second thought passed the item in the hope that everyone would lot in time. But I had no hope for those legs, so I lotted them in the manner that we lot for copper hairpins and feather collars after appraising our ??? items. A lot that doesn't seem to matter.

Honest to whatever deity you believe in, I wish Bairrionn lotted a 980 instead. He could make more use of it than I could. Or I wish we could all think a bit more clearly when there are 10 seconds left on the Nyzul clock. But I can't. I don't believe Damagedperson could until the very last moment, either. And that's my main point. None of us were ready to prevent this mistake from occurring.

I realize and regret that simply passing the item instead of lotting would have prevented this from happening at all. But put me under a ten second clock with accumulating Nyzul stress and I have half the brains I normally have to think things through. I have blundered while perfectly relaxed anyway, so that isn't saying much.

All I can do is regret that I had not read about the trick, that I did not prepare myself for such a scenario, or even considered the surest solution to the problem at all. Sometimes the most obvious things escape us.

Perhaps this will not change your mind as to whether it was my intent to steal Bairrionn's denali kecks or not, but I just wanted anyone curious enough to know what it was like to be in such a position. I have blundered countless times on countless things in this game, but none as serious as a fake Ninja lot which I ended up winning.

I do not believe saying sorry or asking forgiveness has any worth.
Instead, this is the most appropriate answer I have come up with this past week:

Bairrionn, if you have the time to read this post, I will gladly host the nyzul20 boss i currently have access to and get you a pair of boots, if you want any. Or I can host as many Nyzul40 runs as required to get you Denali Kecks or whatever legs you might want instead. Just gotta wait for me to get there, I'm only on 21-25 on my own discs.

Holy fucking wall of text. But just based on the response I would say this guy seems like a fairly stand up type since he's offering to host the run again. Most shady folks don't do that. But saying and doing are two different things.

No, it shouldn't have. His response was well-thought out and well-written, and speaks much better of him then a simple apology can. If you can't be assed to read it, then don't read it.
