Brutal New York (Pics from 1965-95 depicting a city in shambles)

    http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=402544

Pretty fascinating stuff. I lived Astoria, Queens for a year in 1993 and didn't attend first grade until I moved to New Jersey at the age of 6. I do remember that certain area being a complete shithole (lolQueens) but nothing like this.

    From page 8-9

in 1990 the total murders for NYC was 2,262
in 2007 the total murders for NYC was 496
So far in 2008, there has been 200 murders

That's an awesome thread. I highly recommend everyone read at least the first post.

I'm too young to really know how bad NYC used to be. Growing up I had always heard about how violent it was and how poorly many of the people there lived, but when I finally made my way up there on a family vacation several years back I remember being impressed. Granted, we were on vacation so we went to the nicer areas for the most part, but even some of the bad areas we ventured to seemed ok. Little did I know that only a couple decades ago the place could nearly be considered a war zone.

NYC was really "shite" until Dinkens put 10,000 additional new cops in the streets. The results of which were really felt in and often mis-credited to the Giuliani era.

That's pretty brutal, though, as a kid my parents brought me all around NYC due to various reasons and I remember alot of shitty scenes like that. >.>

iirc the funding for this came from the Clinton Administration's massive funding & lobbying efforts for community policing. Then again, I suppose you could also say that this increase in police presence had other intended and unintended consequences, which were implemented by Guiliani.

And yea.. I remember a huge difference just in the city's feel from when I went to NYC with student trips in like 1991 vs. clubbing/concerts/etc. in the late 90s/early 00's.

Funny story, I recently returned to California after six years in Jersey. Aside from the youth(kids are little dickheads no matter where you go nowadays), people on the east coast--and NY specifically--are more affable and polite than on the west coast(or California at least), whether on the road or in person.

Californians? I've found we're a bunch of snots.

I love this picture because the Statue of Liberty embellishes all that is the american dream. As you sail in and see the statue, you know you've arrived. Yet just a few miles away...

Very moving, thank you for posting this. I really had no idea the state of urban decay that NYC suffered in the 60s and they legacy they have to live with today.

The story about James and Barbara was depressing. Awesome thread, I thought NYC was horrible when I was growing up in it but this is horrendous. It really reminds me how grateful I should be and how strong my mother was in raising me and my brother and sister. Stuff like this really pisses me off when you compare it to emo kids shooting up schools because girls don't like them, some people simply don't understand what they have and take it for granted.

Thanks for posting, was a great read. I'm going to send it to my parents since they lived in New York for their whole lives until they had me and my brother; interested in what they have to say about it since they never really mentioned anything like this in the past.
