    Not really a tradition but I'm going to make Cannoli's to take to my family's thanksgiving dinner this year. I cheat and buy premade shells (tastes awesome in tortilla as well but not as pretty that way) and then make up the filling.

    Totally different perspective since I'm a) Canadian, and b) influenced by both English and French Canadian traditions in my family. Though my family doesn't have much of a set menu from year to year for thanksgiving, I find these dishes popping up quite a bit.

    - Mashed turnips and carrots with heavy cream and butter
    - Potato leek soup
    - Cold beat salad with garlic-sautéed beet greens and feta cheese (totaly non-traditional but beets are good eating in October)
    - Baked squash
    - Pumpkin pie

    Things like sweet potato pie/casserole, baked (or not) mac and cheese, and green bean casserole are pretty much unheard of as thanksgiving dishes out West where I live.

    One of my favorites is pistachio salad. It's a good light side to accompany turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, w/e.

    * 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
    * 1 (3 ounce) package instant pistachio pudding mix
    * 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
    * 1/2 (10.5 ounce) package miniature marshmallows

    In a large bowl, combine the pineapple and dry pistachio pudding mix. Fold in thawed whipped topping and marshmallows until well mixed. Refrigerate until chilled and serve.

    Mac 'n' cheese, really? >_> Americans are weird. D:

    My family does the usual at Thanksgiving (turkey, potatoes, dressing, etc.), but they do an awesome marshmallow salad. :d Oh, and pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.

    Another good side is coke salad. This recipe is fairly simple (some have cream cheese or other stuff); it uses canned cherry pie filling rather than fresh cherries.

    Ingredients:
    * 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple
    * 1/2 cup water
    * 2 (3 ounce) packages cherry gelatin
    * 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
    * 3/4 cup cola

    Instructions:
    • Drain pineapple, reserving juice; set pineapple aside.
    • In a saucepan or microwave, bring pineapple juice and water to a bowl. Add gelatin; stir until dissolved.
    • Stir in pie filling and cola. Pour into serving bowl.
    • Refrigerate until slightly thickened.
    • Fold in reserved pineapple.
    • Refrigerate until firm.

    edit: I just remembered that it's also good with chopped pecans in it.

    Whoa, not to derail, but if you aren't American why are you celebrating?!?!

    I made this BITCHEN mac and cheese saturday for the hell of it. it probably cost me 20$ but holy shit it was worth it.

    Basically it was a Monray sauce (look it up) with about half a cup each - Smoked Cheddar, Smoked Gruyere, Regular Gruyere, Gouda, 2 year Parm-Reg (the good shit, don't skimp), and Emantillier (I can't spell this one at all, but it's basically an upgraded swiss cheese, swiss would work find). Melt that into the Monray sauce, add noodles enough to fill a casserole dish (a little runny is ok, it will tighten in the oven) and put in a 350 degree oven for like 15-20 minutes. After that sprinkle on some Panko and put under a broiler until the panko gets nice and brown.

    Shit was EASILY the best mac and cheese I've ever had.
