PS3 as Blu-ray Player?

Preface: While I know there's the big "Console War" thread, I didn't feel much like wading through 300 pages to filter out what I would like.

I just purchased my first HDTV this weekend and am extremely happy with it. While it will only do 720p, more or less a budget constraint, I know I want to get a Blu-ray player as my next purchase. I've currently got an Xbox360, which I use as my DVD player, and would be quite happy to use a PS3 for Blu-ray and DVD playing in the future.

Those of you with PS3s how do you find the Blu-ray playback? Everything I read seems to be quite positive, and with the current price of Blu-ray players around $300 it seems like a good deal with a $399 PS3.

Plays perfectly and the PS3 is nice and quiet. I have no other Blu-ray player usage to compare it to, but I've never had any problems with the PS3.

From what I've read, the PS3 is actually one of the best, if not the best blu-ray player that you can get, especially since the firmware can be updated.

I guess the other question I have is weather or not the PS3 will upscale SD-DVDs? I've seen conjecture to say that it will and it won't, or limitations to say that it will only do it to 480p and not higher resolutions.

It's one of the best all around Blu-Ray players...primary reason I bought mine, actually.

Far as upscaling, it does, and it does a very nice job of it. The limitation is that it will only upscale to 1080p over HDMI, but that sort of thing is normal (for content protection reasons). I'm not sure about 720, since I have a 1080p TV.

One of the reasons I love having a PS3 is playing blu-ray discs. The playback is exceptional on my new TV (61", 1080p) with HDMI. I think it's well worth the cost over just a plain blu-ray player considering you can play DVDs, Blu-ray, and games on it.

Cool, thanks for the replies folks. I would assume that it would upscale to 720p if it will do it to 1080 (some of the conjecture I read said that it would not upscale to 1010, but would to 720), but it's nice to know that it does do upscaling in some form or another. I guess I'll be looking into a PS3 one of these days soon for some new stuff. I should at least get something I can hook into one of my three HDMI inputs since my 360 is a pre-2007 model and only has component HD.
