    Advice on monk

May belong in random question thread, but I will throw this out there and see if I get a bite on it.

I had a 30$ gift card to bestbuy and bought vanadiel 2008 collection. I am reinstalling right now and going to be picking back up on my tarutaru. I was thinking of going monk and had pose a question to you all:

Since tarutarus are on the low end of STR, would it be more viable for me to stack on STR or ATT? Also, with O.Kote vs. RSE mitts? RSE mitts give +3 STR and decent HP amount vs. Att on O.Kote. Any monks (Especially Tarutaru monks) responding to this thread would be most appreciated, thanks.

STR is nice, but there's slots where you can get it without sacrificing 20 attack. O.kote are hands-down better.

I'm also no monk, but I assume monks want acc and atk.

Okotes for meleeing and rse for ws maybe. definitely melee in okotes and any other attack gear. taru doesn't make that much of a difference until end game when everyone just epeens and tarus happen to epeen for alittle less. it shouldn't effect your damage much at all in a pt

edit: i recommend sam over mnk though =/

I am also a taru mnk and I think the best way to look at is that accuracy, haste, attack (and double attack) are the things you want to keep adding or increasing. We do DOT damage: spike damage on weapon skills is not where mnks hand out most of our pain.

Asuran fists will be your bread and butter skill to go a1ong with DOT and in those you will find adding str (in exchange for what could have been better stats) will often hurt your output.

The effect the extra str that some races have over tarus is just unimportant as far as total damage output is concernded. (We're talking about a difference of 1-2% in damage here!) Playing your job properly will exceed that number many times over.

Don't use STR for WS. MNK normally WS in a lot of their TP gear, until you get to endgame and can create viable sets for both, but you don't need to worry about that right now.

Exceptions apply to things that don't benefit WS. For example, if you're at a level where you're using Kick Boots and you're about to WS, you can swap those out for some +ACC shoes. Additionally, using Life Belt instead of your JSE belts for WS is often the best choice.

Don't worry about Tarutaru having lower STR, any race playing MNK properly is going to follow the same gear choices.

Also, don't read stuff that Genome says, he's been banned from most online FFXI communities and presents an argument that sounds convincing, but is a bunch of bullshit either stolen from others or poorly researched.

Depends on what you are fighting. I personally use Usukane Gote for TP(used Noritsune before), O.Kote for Asuran. If you are fighting gimp mobs, can fulltime Kote. Never TP in STr gear though and Asuran STR mods is weak, so Acc and Atk mostly, STR is a bonus if it's on the gear.

    Taru ftw btw

lvl 1-70 TP and WS in the same TP gear.
not really much a difference really. I find TP gear's accurancy work better in WS during EXP so i miss lesser combo/raging fist hit. Oh for MNK you may prefer life belt over brown belt for WS but if you wanna safe up 1 inventory space, brown belt alone for WS is fine. kote for MNKs can be used till 75 until u get a jeuno AF2. if you wanna rush up your lvl, you can totally skip MNK AFs. not really much of a boost anyway.

    remember:
    1. brown belt + life belt: good mnk!
    2. brown belt w/o life belt: nothing wrong
    3. life belt w/o brown belt: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

as for endgame, MNK got so much good gears pre or post salvage. Taru factor isnt a problem at end game really.
    I prefer taru PLDs anyway

Alrighty, thanks guys! appreciate it, I usually play mage classes for my years in FFXI, never really touched melee too much I got my mnk @ 12 gonna start here tonight. Only thing I gotta farm is the O.Kote, which should be ok with my mages. Thanks again!

I disagree with you to an extent. While Asuran Fists is certainly Mnk's most documented WS, you shouldn't rule out Howling Fist or Dragon Kick. Properly geared up, you're doing more on average with Howling Fist than you would on Asuran Fists.

That wasn't my point (to rule out anything.)

As for the rest, we should drop this debate since this is well past what the OP was asking about.
