ventrilo?

Hope I'm asking this in the right section.

Can I get some opinions from everyone about what my ls can use for voice communication? I have been on ventrilo before but are there any other/better options? I don't need detailed instructions how to set it up or anything. just looking for opinions on which program/hostserver are best and why.

Vent's a personal favorite, it's simple, light and real easy to setup...never had a server myself though, always used friends so dunno much about that, there's also Teamspeak but I didn't like it as much

My friends and me use Vent whenever we are on WoW, never had a problem with it. I have tried TS before, but found it to be too buggy

Vent works fine, afaik there's only the official client.

I bought hosting from typefrag, so far no problems using their service.

If just those two options exist I guess we'll go with vent. Now where to host it...

If anyone knows much about vent, I have a question.

Vent has always worked fine for me, but I just got a new PC and for some reason sometimes with wow open, my PTT key fails to go through wow and is not recognized in vent. Any other window open, and normally it works fine, but once in a while in wow it stops, and I have no idea how to fix it, stop it, or replicate it. Any Ideas? I'm running Vista 64bit so maybe it's because of the alpha version?

Edit:: Think it might have something to do with my G15, might have solved it, we'll see...

I have about 10-15 typefrag servers from random guilds on my server, and they're always up and never seem to have trouble, not to mention it just seems to be a very common hosting place from what i'm seeing in my personal list (maybe just my server's weird though *shrug)

windows vista, disable UAC and run vent as admin

You can adjust everyone's volume in vent as well. I just don't think vent is free.

I've tried both TS and Vent, the killer for me was TS had no controller support back in the day (dunno if they ever fixed this), binding a controller button to keyboard was not an option, so I went to vent and stuck there since. In vent you can just press the button on the controller you want as PTT and presto it works. Vent is user friendly, even girls in my LS can use it!

I highly doubt it has better sound quality than vent. Comparable perhaps, but better? If you've never ran a vent server you probably have no idea of how high the quality can be set. A vent server can run at incredibly high bit rates, at the expense of bandwidth.

As for controlling volume, vent has the capability of not only controlling volume, but slapping on a host of DirectSound effects, including compression (helps to even out the highs/low volume of people's voices), volume, pitch, echo, and a few others, all on a per-user basis.

Another alternative that I haven't seen mentioned is Skype, although I'm not a big fan of it. I'm not sure if Skype has the capability to be hosted on a server, as the way we ran it was always having someone host and everyone connected to the host. Made for laggy chat, and Skype compensates by downgrading sound quality (in other words, Skype was pretty sucky when you got around 5 or more people on it.)

Yeah, 16-bit 44.1kHz GSM is crystal clear, but at the cost of almost 9KB/sec. Speex at its max settings is just as good, and only takes a little over 5KB/sec. Makes me wish phone calls were just as good

you're right, i was just going by my experience with ventrilo and the average sound quality of the various servers i've been a part of.

Yeah I tried that, and didn't work for some reason still. I figured it was due to alpha version, some bug maybe, or my G15.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, UAC already disabled, tried running as admin anyway - and then I tried messing with some G15 settings and it seemed to work.

For some reason, I think there was a Delay in my G12 key (its binded as my PTT key, Insert). When I would press Insert by itself, it worked fine. So I went into the profiler and messed with the Gkey's again and it works fine now.

Just has seen this thread when I was trying to fix my Vent scripts with new version that came. Vent is great and cheap really for 30 slots at my provider is about 5 bucks a month. Only problem I have with it is the over sound volume can not be normalized for each person with one control. I assume that would be hard cause of the live part of it.
