Everyone Who Lives In NewYork: I Need Your Help!

I would like to come to NewYork, from July 25 to August 8, alone or with my gf. It will be my first trip to America, woo! :D

Anyways I wanted to know if someone of you, that live in the manhattan area, could have a room to rent in those weeks or if you know someone that rents rooms for cheap.

With a couple of bed would be better, cause I'd like to take my gf with me (one its ok too cause my first plan was to come alone) and, obviously, at least a shower.

I was thinking to rent a bike there, to move faster and visit as much as I can. Is there any rent-a-bike in the manhattan area?

Ok, from now to July there are 7 months. I really hope to find here someone who can help or give me any advice!

    Thanks guys!

p.s.: sorry for my bad engrish! I'm so Italian!

Why would you need (or WANT) more than 1 bed?

Don't stay in New York, stay in New Jersey. It's a lot cheaper and you can take the ferry (I think it's like $20, very minimal charge either way) from the Jersey coast to lower/upper Manhattan. Sightsee, look around, do what you want to do, then take the Ferry back to NJ at night. You'll save a ton if you get a room over there.

Don't get a bike, just walk. If it's too far to walk, take a cab. Riding a bike (pedal or motorcycle, whatever you meant) is suicide in NYC unless you're staying the in the park.

This is something I was worried about due to the intense traffic NY has. Thanks for the info bro! :D

I wanted to stay as close as I can to the center of Manhattan. Not having a car and having the appartment far from the center would force me to stay in my room every night after dinner. Good advice btw, thanks again!

I've asked 2 bed if I come with my gf cause, if a student is gonna rent me his room, I don't think he has a double size bed! :D

Subway is pretty convenient to get you from manhattan to brooklyn and back. If you have an iphone, you would have no problem navigating in NYC. Also, don't take cabs, especially during rush hours.

How much you looking to spend? Before my gf moved here a year and a half ago i came with her to look at places and we stayed in times square (oh how naive we were) at the quality inn ie. the most misleading name for a hotel ever. It was almost 200 a night for a tiny, tiny room. Terrible. Your best bet is to check craigslist.com under the rooms for rent section, in the summer it is easy to find people who are renting out their entire apartments while they are not there. The prices range depending on how nice the place is and its location. You may find just rooms for rent too, but seeing as it would be with strangers, you may as well just take the whole apartment for the week.

Biking for transportation in Manhattan is not an option, you will most likely die from collision or a heart attack from an impending collision. The subway takes you everywhere, use it.

I spent a weekend there and stayed at my friend's place in brooklyn. 1 block walk to the subway, 3 stops to Manhattan, it worked brilliantly.

Basically just reiterating what everyone else is saying.

    - West End Studios Hotel & Hostel
    - The Widget Hotel
    - Candy Hotel & Hostel

So you spending about $500 for somewhere to stay 14 nights. That's about $35 a night, quite a bargain in NYC.

LOL seriously man, 35 bucks a night is insane. I hope someone here can help you out because the going rate for 2 weeks in mid-manhattan is about 3-4 times what you are trying to spend.

I said thats the cheapest packet I found lurking online! Looking moar on the offers, seems all those hostel that are given as choice, are all between 45 and 50$ a night.

Anyone from NY know those names I posted or can ask someone any feedback for those hostels?

p.s.: If I can have the choice, I prefer giving 400/500$ to a guy like me whos renting me his room instead to a dirty poor hostel! :D

Stay in Union City, New Jersey by 32nd St. It's about 5 minutes from the Lincoln tunnel which pretty much drops you off in 42nd St., Times Square, in New York. It's worlds cheaper and has buses constantly running back and forth for dirt cheap. Once your in Times Square you can pretty much hit any point in Manhattan via Port Authority.

Pro Tip: Stay away from Hostels. Roth and Tarantino taught me that.

But on a serious note man, good luck looking. I hope someone offers you a place to crash during your stay, that would be the best bet. I have family in NY and luckily I stayed with them during the times I went. Tried to be hard one year and didn't want to crash with a house full of family and my parents, so I went hotel looking. 150-250 was pretty much standard even for the shittiest most down trodden room you can find.

After seeing that making a pallet on the living room floor never felt so good. Good thing is you have time on your side and decided to do this in advance. Good luck to you man.

I don't think you understand how expensive that is. Hotels in downtown Manhattan are either insanely expensive ($500+ a night) or they're in shitty hotels that are dangerous and where people go to partake in illegal activities. Trust me, stay in New Jersey. Buses run at all hours on the weekends, and go til around 2am during the weekdays. Cabs are expensive so avoid them if you can, but they are safe.

Walking around NYC is very safe these days, it's one of the safest cities for tourists in the US. Just use common sense. Cops are everywhere, and are generally friendly if you have questions or are lost.

Also, generally speaking, tourists and foreigners do not stay in hostels when they visit here. They're much more popular (and safer) in Europe and Asia than they are here. The US equivalent are called Motels, so ask for those. If you ask an American where the nearest hostel is, they're going to assume you're looking for hookers.

Cautery, here's NYC's craigslist rent & share section, I hope you will find a decent place.

What Ceph said is generally correct. I live in NYC (Sorry studio apartment no rooms )

Although contrary to popular belief there are some cheap options in Manhattan besides the hostels. (shudder)

Find long-term hotels, they offer great rates by the week.

Remember! NYC is in a SERIOUS recession. People are losing jobs, rent is falling. I'd definitely look into renting someone's apartment for 2 weeks. Craigslist.org is your friend. To reiterate whats been said. Look outside of Manhattan as well. Brooklyn has some trendy, cheap hotels. Jersey City is literally across the river and has much lower prices.

Walking around NYC is half the fun anyway, the subway system + walking is all part of the experience. Also, second what Ceph mentioned full on. Taking the train everyday may seem unappealing to a tourist but it's really not bad at all. I took a ferry like maybe 5 times in my whole time living in the NJ/NY area and don't remember it at all so it's probably quick or just really boring, subway's good though and gets you within walking distance of stuff.

This. When I went there last year, I was suprised how close the subway took us to the places we went.
