Returning player from 4+ year absence!!!

    HELLLLOOOO

My last login was 3/28/04.... and I managed to reactivate my level 45 White Mage through the Home Campaign...

So, is my return a mistake? should I start deleting and running for the hills? I played last night with my PS3 controller and I feel like I'm starting over completely! I have 0 macros set up, i feel like I can't even play or have to relearn the basics of a white mage, lol.

I was running around lost, with my chocobo, trying to re-live old memories and locations. I've completely forgot where I was last leveling from, or where everything is. This is what happens when you quit MMORPGs and focus on life... ha.

I'm in the Bahamut server, and linkshell-less. If anyone needs or is looking for a 45 white mage newbie, holla. Handle is the same as my forum name.

I don't want to discourage you from trying to play the game, but I will say it can be a rough (or slow) start as most players are past the newbie content. I'm sure you can network and find a social linkshell willing to help

I remember back in the day, all new areas were such an adventure. Finding nice leveling spots were abundant. Places we had to travel for miles to settle down and level for hours. I'm guessing these days there aren't many level'ing, rather people using their bots and mules to level?

People use mules yes, but they're no fun.
It can be quite refreshing to read the adventures of a new player, how they got their subjobs and their kazham keys... aren't many of those left...

My advice is to look at the thread titled "FFXI Related Websites Compilation". Sites like ffxiah.com and sites with maps of areas are listed there - all very useful tools that I wish I had known about (or rather, I wish had existed) when I started.

If you look hard enough, there are people still looking to grind out missions. People doing stuff like eco-warrior and garrison is unheard of in these parts

Thanks for the advice. I know the learning curve wasn't all that huge (I came from eve online, which had a huge curve). I guess I'm just looking for a LS

You'll find plenty of people leveling second, third, fourth, etc jobs as you go along, and there's always level sync to grab the people who are leveling subs again. If you're nice enough, maybe one of them will give you a pearl.

If you wanna make a serious re-attempt at this game, last year (4 years too late) they added a tutorial NPC for newbies.

You're better off making another character instead of using the one you have considering you've forgotten almost everything.

There's more and better places to level now than ever. Check out Campsitarus for where to exp. Level Synch makes putting together a good party a cinch.

Campsitarus-- The guide to FFXI xp camps! ^^

As for traveling miles, FFXI is easier to get around then back then, with various warp NPCs.

As for missions, as long as they're BCMs, people are pretty willing to help since there's no EXP loss now.

    Welcome back!

At least he's got a SJ leveled up for a good portion of the game. Go BRD. You'll get so much so fast your head will spin. If not BRD, RDM is an acceptable alternative.

    FFXI has only improved since 4 years ago so you should have a lot of fun provided you find a good Linkshell. If I were you, I'd probably start again rather then entering a party as 45 WHM and not know what you're doing ^_^;

You can't really ask others if you should come back and stay though, play if you want to and don't if you don't.

Thanks for the replies and welcomes.

It has been difficult readjusting myself and my character. Setting up macros alone took forever lol.

I will probably give a new job a try and see whether or not I can get back into this.

I do wish I had loads of gil. Back then, I got into cloth crafting, and found many stacks of crystals and not a whole lot of gil, 30k.

Thanks for the campsitarus. I actually went back to the Crawler's Nest as that was one of my favorite leveling spots. Too bad the entire region was empty

Are many people fleeing to new areas with the expansion to level?

Do some campaigns with your search flag up and someone will find you. Highly recommend taking about 2 hours and running through and getting most, if not all, Cavernous Maws. Maybe the only exception would be Sauromugue Champaign [S]. Though i do recommend this one as well as talking to the Lycopodium (in the past) to make sure you can warp behind Gate 2 for when you get high enough and need to open coffers.

Feel free to contact me in-game if you need some info, etc...

I have no LS to propose you, only some tips here and there, but don't hesitate.

And welcome back! (don't listen to biased ppl telling you it's not worth it)

Not so much fleeing, moreso that there are fewer people xping, and with Level Sync, people can pick and choose what camps they go to. There are a handful of camps that yield awesome xp with the right setup, so people tend to keep syncing to those until they get high enough to jump to the next camp. Personally, I got most of the way from 62-75 at a 57~60 camp, because we could pull ~20k/hr there without breaking a sweat.

For your level, I think people generally stick to Colibri in Ronfaure [S] for a while, but there are some decent camps in Altepa as well that are better than the Nest camps. If it's empty, Qufim is an amazing spot to sync given the right setup. Don't know how it compares to Ronf[S] though, since I never got to try it out.
