    Job Hunting

Yeah, I know many of you are college grads, and a lot of you in college are working internships. However, this isn't the case for me.

I've been working at a fast food restaurant(Wendy's) for almost 3 years now. I started off making $6.75/hr and now I'm at $8.50/hr. I can't get any higher, and I'm the highest paid non-manager we have. The only reason I'm paid as much as I am is because I put in a two weeks notice a while back without even having another job lined up. That's how frustrated I am with this job.

My main reason for quitting is my boss....who also happens to be my girlfriend's mother.

She's a self-centered, 300lb lazy bitch. After the lunch rush is over, she does nothing but sit on her ass. I'm having to run two to three positions at once because she sends people home. I called her out on it today, and she threatened me with my job. Unfortunately for her, my father is director of operations for the franchise, so more than likely I could just be re-hired at another Wendy's if I chose to do so.

So, here's what I need. What kind of jobs are out there that I could at least apply for? I know with the shit economy and whatnot, no one will be hiring, but it never hurts to try. Where could I apply for a job at besides food restaurants, and giant retail shit like Wal-Mart?

Also, I'm a 5'7" 115lb skinnyman, so manual labor jobs are out.

Check your local unemployment office for PT/FT office work. (not an economy joke, being serious. Hiring pretty well around here in NJ anyway)

Not sure what they pay though.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is PT/FT office work? lol

EDIT: Oh. Part-time/full-time. I'm an idiot. Scratch that. XD

Data Entry is usually a good place to start. However, most companies won't post ads outside their doors half the time. Walk right into a building, go to the human resources center and say you're looking for a job. They usually have a book that they keep updated on what kind of jobs are available. I believe most data entry jobs will start around $8-$10ish depending on the company.

No tip or free food, but the pay's decent and the job's easy. Give it a shot, best of luck.

I'd suggest just staying where you're at and take the bullshit because there's nothing out there. I've been unemployed for about 3 months. Just about every interview has consisted of "I can't afford to pay you," "You're over qualified," and my favorite "We'll call you if we need you." You're also in a pretty bad situation as it is anyway, working for family sucks. Maybe transfer behind her back if you can, because I doubt she's going to let you go since she might actually have to do some work.

gotta go where the jobs are, that's why I'm in bumbkin land middle oregon, it's still alien to me that people say our economy is bad, cause a nearly no skills guy like me can still find a couple jobs to choose from.

to the OP: the whole girlfriend's mother is your boss, and your dad's position thing is like A+ drama, would read again.
however, I gotta ask what state do you live in? after 3 years and only 8.50 an hour just seems crazy to me... I don't even have a year under my belt as a cashier and I'm getting 9.30 an hour (then again, oregon's minimum wage is now 8.40 an hour so, kinda funny my job gives only .40 raises once per year, but our minimum wage went up .45)

    giant retail shit like Wal-Mart?
and I work at a wal-mart I don't like walmart all that much as the next guy, but, like Sol-Blackguy is saying, a job's a job.

I've worked at UPS for two and a half years, make 12.20 an hour and have health, dental and vision insurance. Like you said, you're not really in shape, but it's damn good money, not a ton of hours though, and you'll get used to it.

Check your local and county websites, see what sort of entry level jobs they have. Retail sucks, but I consider it a step above fast food. UPS/FedEx are both good places though from what I hear most of the jobs they have start as part time, but you get a decent hourly wage out of it.

You can try health care logistics. Worked as a supply tech for 3 years. Made $8.75 before I left, easy work. Good hours, 8AM-4:30PM M-F. Good benefits, full health, dental, vision, 401K, PTO.

OR, if you prefer less drama (angry doctors, annoying nurses and staff inside a hospital) you can work at a hospital warehouse. I'm currently at one and I like it, good hours, same benefits as my previous job, a bit more physical but worth it.

Also remember, bigger hospital = better pay. I make $14/hr at my current job, only been there two months. They usually have more openings since they have bigger departments.

    Good luck!

Edit: Forgot to mention, it's a good job for someone starting out, since they usually only require a high school diploma.

    I live in...Alabama. lol

There is no minimum wage law here, we just go by the federal rate, which at the moment is $6.55. People don't get paid shit here.

In terms of school, yes, I am in school, but I took the semester off because I was getting stressed out juggling school and work. However, I can't afford to quit my job because I need the money. I wanted to build up a small amount of money so I could cut back on work hours when I start school. And going to school for what, I'm not sure. Major is still kind of up in the air...

If you can get on at FedEx or UPS, do it; I made $13.87 an hour at entry, the work isn't nearly as physically demanding as people make it sound. I worked there for 4 months before going back to school, has full benefits with 90% coverage. There are a TON of fat people that work there and don't do shit, the job is only as hard as you make it, if you show up on time every day and create the illusion that you're working you won't get fired and will get perfect performance reviews. Part time to start.

Something else you might want to check is USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site
A lot of their job postings don't end up in newspapers or other common places. They do have quite a few entry level positions and a lot of jobs you've probably never even thought about.

This is how I got mine back when I applied in June of last year. It took them till the end of July to make an offer but it worked out in the end. Definitely suggest looking around on there for something that fits.

I agree 100% with this. My wife was laid off a couple of months ago and is going through the exact same thing. The only place to get a job right now is in health care at the hospital. If you want to be a nurse then you can get a job easy. If you don't then stay where you are and put up with the BS because chances are you will not find another job.

You call it a giant shit retail and yet are working for $8 an hour? I just hired a baby face kid straight out of high school with no experience for $14.45 an hour. Many people don't like the company but our pay is a lot better then many think.

After three years you can be making damn near $20 if actually come to work every day.

On a second reading of this thread, I'm reminded of pussytrolls for some reason.
