Problems with some embedded media in firefox

I've been having this problem for a while, and I'm sick to death of it. Sometimes I cannot make embedded media load in firefox, no matter what I do. I've noticed this most often on perezhilton.com (I know, fuck me) with the videos posted there. This also happens with thedailyshow.com and a handful of other random sites that I don't visit with enough regularity to recall right now.

I'm using 3.0.8 with noscript 1.9 and adblock 0.5, and whitelisting everything/either temp or permanently allowing pages does not seem to work. When I allow a page with embedded media that isn't appearing, the placeholder simply disappears and nothing takes its place. Disabling adblock entirely does not work. As far as I know, I have all the appropriate plugins: divx, java, realplayer, quicktime, and shockwave flash are all listed in my addons. As far as I am aware, all of these are up to date.

The truly confusing thing is that many other media sites do work. Youtube works, funnyordie (ugh) works, redlasso works, collegehumor works, and lots of random flash games work, among other things. It's also worth noting that this content was not always broken. There was a time when I could listen to songs/watch videos posted on those 2 particular sites. At some point, probably within the last 6-8 months, shit stopped working and I can't force it to play in firefox through any measure. Am I just missing a plugin? Was there some huge update in the last 6 months that I've managed to miss? Why is this content broken and how can I fix it? Copypasta-ing into another browser is starting to get really annoying.

Sorry if I haven't provided enough information here; please let me know if there's anything else I need to post in order to determine what the problem might be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I also have the media player connectivity addon installed so that I can click to open media files that don't work in firefox (which I assume windows media player files do not?) in their respective players. When I do that with this particular video, it tells me the file extension is .swf, which if I am not mistaken is still a macromedia flash extension, isn't it? I have adobe flash player 10 -- in fact I specifically updated the flash player 3 or 4 separate times thinking that may be related. Is there some kind of compatibility issue between firefox and flash, or a special step I need to take to properly install/activate updates for it?

Edit: I also apparently have nothing on my computer to play .swf files? Is that not a shockwave flash file? No idea what's going on.

One catch-all recommendation is to create a completely new profile in Firefox and try running with that. It's usually suggested when nothing else you've tried works, and primarily for troubleshooting reasons.

Back up your old one, try that, and see what happens.

Thanks Kohan. I tried this, and it looks like adblock is the source of my problems. When it's not enabled at all, the videos work. When it's enabled, it screws these up regardless of whether or not the page or entire site they originate from is whitelisted. I guess it's just a matter of disabling adblock all the time, which is annoying.

what filter list do you use? have you accidentally adblocked a whole domain that's required? iirc, both south park and the daily show use mtv's servers as their data source, so if you blacklisted them, that may be part of your problem. try flushing your list of blacklisted material and setting easylist (if that's even still being updated. i think the maintainer passed recently at only 56 or so. what a shame.) as your source and you should be good to go.
