I can't help but wonder about Milkman's review. It was about a tiny piece of DLC scam. DLC that did fuck all for mechanics like an update could. So how could it get the lowest score(F is 1up's lowest score right?) when Milkman also gave FFXI something like a B+ if I am right. How could this be if the DLC plays the exact same? Maybe a C or a D for poor "stage" design, but really now. I don't really care why exactly he gave it a F because I know it isn't for a good reason unless his entire opinion of FFXI has changed.

It would be easy to just say James Mielke is an idiot and move on, but - actually I think I have to point out just how easy it is. Too damn easy. But anyway, FFXI posters here are basically doing the same thing. Well not the ones who are convinced FFXI is a terrible game. Their opinion is useless though. Same goes for people who feel the same way, but still play for friends. What a cop-out of an answer that would be. Maybe if we were talking about SecondLife you furry queer.

Now could BG handle this question? I doubt it. One or all of these would happen:

1) hurr shitstorm. Even if I clearly stated I had no interest in learning why FFXI is bad(or even made it like a rule), someone like Neosatra or whomever is the current Flux would still air their discontent and derail the thread to shit.

2) hurr shitstorm. All it would take is one butthurt WoW fanboy and one comparison to WoW that is favorable to FFXI to derail the thread. The problem here is the fanboy, not the comparison. (How else could you judge a game other than comparison? Since WoW isn't any fun it would probably being pointless in the end, but I'd like to see them try)

3) Storyline! While this is a reasonable answer to an extent it tells me nothing about FFXI as a game(and alone it would be stupid.) I doubt I'd get a whole thread of people just saying this, but it makes for a very easy excuse.

4) People ignore what the thread is about and answer with nothing but the following two: "Addicted" and "Friends."

5) All of BG realizes FFXI isn't a good game and ceases to exist. Then the universe explodes.

In the end nothing is really more satisfying than causing a giant shitstorm so maybe I'll post it anyway.

Could one see FFXI as anything more than goal-porn with entirely superficial challenge? This is what most MMOs amount to these days.

FFXI is a bad game, but what keeps me addicted is that theres still bad people that play it and being better them even with my shitty gear keeps me interested. The game mechanics are so fucked that you literally have to study the game the make right decisions in what to do at different points(gear choices and so on.) Also what keeps me interested is the playerbase, I get a real kick at seeing people that are so adamant about their little misconstrued theories about the game mechanics(moon phases effecting drop rates and other faggotish bullshit like that.) I find it absolutely hilarious that people actually debate things like this just for the simple fact that the randomness in the game already without them adding more shit to the shit pile really its all just lol. Mostly its that minor increase in what you can do with your gear that gets me. You can have almost the best gear in the game and you can still be a retard and not know what the fuck you are doing. Its these people that make me laugh and make me want to punch babies while fapping wildly at how awesome I am when it comes to tanking shit with my piss poor mediocre PLD gear.

Also I would like to add that, yes it is a goal oriented game, but also while most games present some sort of personal goal. One, must have goals that are a challenge to achieve if one must keep interest at the task at hand. If everything were easy then you wouldn't want to play. You would get bored very easily. I also really hate the fact that stuff isn't instanced such as "FFXI's sworn enemy WoW." Obviously WoW is doing something right if they have as large as a player-base as it does. Games where you are able to do as you wish at will while still being presented a challenge have a great deal of appeal to larger audiences. Lets face it, not everyone that plays games is a lifeless loser that doesn't have any responsibilities in life. This is where casual players come in to the picture, if you are going to have a successful game, make sure you can keep the variety of things to do on a large scale while making the content available readily to those wishing to challenge it, whether it be low level or higher level.

Everything has some sort of something goin on that can be mathematically explained thats really not explained inside the game in detail.

You've already explained what will inevitably happen if you post this topic, so beyond finding amusement in a pointless 30+ page back-and-forth between a few loudmouths I don't see any point in posting it. What's really irritating is the fact that anyone that actually gives a good, coherent, non-fanboyish response will immediately have their post drowned in a sea of unrelated flaming, crying, name-calling and general retardation. I got a new idea for a thread. It will leave less room for flamewars(I hope) and at the same time it will force people to answer in a way that fits what I think decides a game's quality.

1) The graphics, as opposed to WoW, the graphics are much better. One of the reasons I refuse to play WoW, other than it being utterly boring, are that it just sucks and I dont want to play a cartoony dwarf.

2) The experience/setting/environment etc, it feels like an FFXI game, which I like. It's immersive and I like it.

3) The job system. I like being able to play multiple jobs, have subjobs, etc all on one character. I dont have to decide from the beginning how I want my character to be, I dont have to create the "perfect" set up while leveling putting INT here and putting STR there or what have you. Essentially I dont have to worry about any min/maxing other than for gear and merits. (Fuck your Race debates)

4) The magic system, I like the magic system. Not only is it the typical Final Fantasy style, which I like, I like in general how it is, what jobs have what magic, what magic is available in the game, how it's handled, each jobs MP, how MP is restored, etc.

5) You know what? I may be weird for liking the games I play. I like MMOs and RPGs, MMORPGs too. The grinding? I like it. I've leveled 6 75's so far and plan to do at least 2 more if not them all eventually. It's fun, I like the partying experience.

6) The endgame content. This is the first item I can't compare with other MMO games. I dont like HNMs, the waiting around is bullshit. However, KS99, Limbus, Salvage, Dynamis, ZNM, Sky, Sea, Einherjar, etc I do like. I even like Pankration and have a level 50 pet I take down Dark Elementals out of spite with.

7) The gear. In some games, you just get gear by leveling, there's no real hard to get gear. I see in some games people get their standard job gear just by leveling, just make sure to take the right gear off the corpse and you're set until you move to that higher level area and find something there. I like how you can actually plan out what you need and how to get it.

8) The economic system. The Auction House, how gil is handled, where gil comes from, and pretty much everything but RMT. Actually, I favored RMT on Bahamut, they made gil so much easier for me to get. On Caitsith there's no RMT here, so the economy seems a bit different and it's much easier for me to obtain what I need, but it's all good.

I'm pretty sure I had at least a point 9 & 10, but seem to have forgotten them in the middle of writing out 8. However now I will go past what legitimately makes a game and what makes the experience of a game better.

The community. Simply put the community of gamers and the standard of people you see in FFXI are higher than other MMOs I've experienced. I'm not talking just friends here, I'm talking that people are generally smarter, more willing to learn, and go out and find information. Look at the complete compendiums that we have, the organization, and the ease of with which we can find almost anything we need to know. As a community we find out new information and share it almost instantly and we strive to let others know what we know. (Fuck your JP's maintaining the rarity of armor)
Though, this point is skewed by not properly looking up the resources for all games. This is just for some free ones, especially Korean.

9) Melee combat. I hate WoW's melee combat. I like the neat rounds we have. I like how, not slow it is, but more... not over done. I'm avoiding saying realistic. I've only played THF, RNG, and DNC as melee.

10) Damage, HP, and MP amounts. I dont like the large huge numbers simply put I dont need the big numbers to feel like I'm doing copious amounts of damage.
