    Audit the Fed (house bill)

Bernanke Fights House Bill To Audit The Fed - Econwatch - CBS News

"I don't think the American people want Congress running monetary policy," he said. "And I think that's very very critical for people to understand."
    -Bernanke

I love how all the economists and everyone on the fed payroll are scrambling to say "Well, we are already, you know, audited, so, you don't really need to do this! Yup, we can just tell you whatever you need!"

Yes, this is a ron paul bill and a lot of house representatives are supporting it oddly enough.

    Very cool

    Look at him squirm!
Bernanke: So that bill, people don't fully understand what that bill is about. It sounds like, audit the Fed, it sounds like "Let's look at the books." That's what it sounds like. Congress already looks at our books. We have many different levels of auditors. The GAO, the General Accountability Office, which is supposed to be doing this audit, already looks at virtually all of our activities. And the ones it doesn't, our financial books, financial loans, and the ones it's not looking at, and where the taxpayer needs some assurance, we're willing to work with Congress to make sure the GAO gets the information it needs.
He says the GAO is doing it, why not let others? He's hiding something!

Would have been funnier if that quote wasn't at the end of my post.

I'm not sure what to think about this.. the Fed is the one (mostly) independent body in our economy. And it's kinda ironic that a hard-line libertarian wants to stick the hand of government oversight into such a body. I'm just sayin..

On a side note.. Ben Bernanke (who happens to be the best educated, economic mind alive today on what was done right and wrong during the Great Depression) seems to be doing a really good job managing the current mess.

As far as I know the bill does not want to influence policy at the Fed. It does call for an account of where the money was 'spent' and what was the rationale behind that spending. Is that too much to ask for? Going to have to explain to me what you mean by an independent body. Apolitical? (lol)

How is a libertarian calling for transparency of the federal reserve at all ironic?

Really? Peter Schiff thinks otherwise from what I hear.

For those of you who think this is pointless, I'd like to remind you of something.

The fed hasn't reported m3 data in a looong time now, which is basically information that says how much money US has.

Just wondering if you or any libertarian really can provide an example of a libertarian values inspired government that works/ed or any example of one ever existing. I really can't think of one maybe you know. Been having a discussion about it at work.
