Sam Adams double bock

Yet another alcohol question..I love Sam in just about all its incarnations. I also love a darker, caramel-y malty beer. But I fucking hate Sam Adams double bock. Do all doppelbocks taste like this? I really want to try Smuttynose S'muttonator, I think it's a doppelbock and I read it's like drinking a milky way bar. But with the Sam double bock it's like drinking Worcestershire sauce, I just can't do it. Do I just not have the palette for it or is it actually as gross as I think it is?

I never got really flavoured malt beers such as thus. I mean yeah, it's nice that it tastes like chocolate or whatever, but I couldn't drink more than a bottle of it before getting tired of it and going back to a simple 'beer' flavour.

Shut up beer is great. I have never heard the term dopplebock before and judging by the description on wiki it seems very similar to most dark stouts and even some lagers. Is there more of a distinct difference between a dopplebock and a stout?

As for darker maltier beers that I personally like, I really enjoy Sheaf, Coopers, RedHook Double Black stout (brewed with coffee), and Kona Brewing Pipeline porter.

I'm sorry but out of the 5-6 different kind of beers I have tried (admittedly a small sample of varieties) they all tasted like different levels of piss, plus provided absolutely no buzz. I'd rather have something flavorful that I don't have to drink 50 gallons of just to get tipsy.

I don't want to derail the thread further however one more reply to explain is in order.

The reason as I stated in my previous post that stating that opinion is shitting up the thread is because this thread is not asking if you like or dislike beer. It is not a general beer thread. It posts a specific question about beer.

Your dislike of beer is impertinent to the actual subject of the thread.

If you had said in your post something closer to "I personally do not like beer however my father really likes it and I see him drinking X beer a lot." or insert any person in that sentence other than father. That would have been productive. Simply stating lolbeer is just unproductive.

you need to try some good belgian dubbels or tripels or golden ales and stuff like that. try chimay (probably best to start with anything but the white label, though nowadays i don't really like much except the white label regarding chimay), maybe delirium tremens, la fin du monde is great and generally cheap. really i think chimay is the best intro. if you're lucky enough to live in a place that sells it, definitely try arrogant bastard (or better, oaked arrogant bastard) from stone brewing company eventually... not really an intro beer (though it could be eye-opening), but one you don't want to miss if you end up being into beer.

it sounds like if you end up liking beer at all, you'll be like me and favor high alcohol content, complex and flavorful beers. a lot of real beer aficionados lean toward stouts and IPAs, but there's a huge variety of world class beer that tastes a lot more like wine and liquor while retaining a lot of the great characteristics of beer. don't count beer out just from piss like budweiser and stella, or even from good representations of their style like guinness since there's many styles.

honestly, i think it's difficult to truly say you don't like beer until you've tried some good belgians, some good IPAs, some good stouts, and even some of the better pilsners around. even among world class beer, going from 1 style to another is like night and day, so you don't know until you sample from many.

Oh yeah I'm on a big wheat beer kick, both the ones you just mentioned, Correction, are two of my favorites. Hoegaarden is really nice, smooth but complex, think it has coriander in it from what I remember but it gives it a really interesting taste, and Blue Moon is just classic. Harpoon's UFO White Ale is incredible too, squeeze a slice of orange in the bottle, tastes like a fucking orange creamsicle.

Anyway, on this beer vs. liquor debate - everybody shut up. There's a time and a place for both, and when I'm alone or with some buddies and we're just kicking back, beer for me provides a much more regulated, consistent buzz/drunkenness than pounding back shots. But when the occasion calls for it, I will sip bourbon or scotch neat or on the rocks. I am not discriminate. Drunk is drunk, tasty is tasty. No need to argue, gang.

Only problem I have now is I've got two Sam Double Bocks in my fridge that I ain't gonna fucking drink, but plenty of Dogfish Head Raison D'etre and Sam Cherry Wheat that I'm more than happy to finish. But I will gladly give away these double bocks, shit.

I am a little confused by this statement. How do IPA's and Stouts make you more of a beer aficionado than other styles? I am just curious because they are both quite different and there are a lot of microbrews that make all different styles that are very good. I personally cannot stand heffewiesens and IPA's and tend to lean more towards stouts, lagers, and porters. Now I don't really think of myself an extremely knowledgeable beer person but I do really like beer and drink a lot of different beers and I am learning.

I'll be honest here: Any doppelbock (double bock) not named -ator is made by faggots. Sorry Sam Adams, but thems the rules.

Anyways, as doppelbocks are probably my favorite style, I'd caution you against dismissing them based on whatever Sam Adams put out. I haven't tried their doppelbock but they don't always get their flavors quite right, so it could be off. If you REALLY want to try a good doppelbock I'd try Spaten Optimator, Ayinger Celebrator, or Troeg's Troegenator. All three are great (Celebrator is the best, but it's the most expensive.) All good doppelbocks will be above average price, but it can be worth it.

Try some of Sam's seasonal brews, usually good training wheels before you jump into the microbrew/craft beer scene (if you so choose). Sam Summer Ale is out at this time, that's a really crisp, tasty, refreshing beer. give it a shot. Also, if you're willing, try out Blue Moon as someone else said, that's a pretty safe but really solid wheat beer. I'd also recommend Magic Hat #9 if you can find it, or Abita Turbo Dog is a nice, solid ale.

No, it's not a very good bock. You enjoy the sweeter, more full bodied bock, and Sam uses a barley that gives it that bitterness. I'm also a fan of full bodied, carmel/vienna flavored bocks and I really, really enjoy Magic Hat's Roxy Roles.

no no, i'm not saying it's any more hardcore or anything to love IPAs, it's just the impression i've got from reading and talking to people. it's almost as if there's 3 levels of beer snobbery:

1) likes macro brew stuff like bud, maybe likes some decent but common and not great beer like, i don't know, maybe blue moon. (not snob; noob)
2) people who only drink belgian beer, wheat beer, etc, but not necessarily many american microbrews and probably not much more than tripels and golden ales.
3) people who prefer really strong micro brews, but drink everything (2) drinks and very little that (1) drinks.

i don't believe in the (1)-(3) "ranking", it's just the impression i've gotten. myself, i strongly favor belgian, but i like lots of different things. maybe the beer snobs who rank IPA above all are a tiny minority that's misled me into this opinion. it doesn't matter; i posted to try to get the "i like liquor b/c beer tastes like piss" type person interested in beer.

i like both hoegaarden and blue moon, and definitely agree with suggesting UFO (i've liked every type of UFO i've tried).

for some random suggestions off the topic of "win you over to beer", my favorites are:

la chouffe
anything by st. peter's (particularly the english ale), though it's overpriced
saison dupont
most beers by allagash
and if you're in the new england area, there's a brewery in east hartford ct (my wrong side of the tracks hometown) called "olde burnside" that makes a great scottish ale ("10 penny ale") and a really surprising, refreshing variation on belgian witbier called "penny weiz" that's actually one of my favorites. it's very light and drinkable, pours sort of an opaque pale orange/yellow, and tastes primarily of orange zest and coriander with a really strong bready aftertaste. i love it, and highly recommend it to anyone who happens to be around CT, MA, etc.
edit: and duvel. i can pretty much always go for duvel
