Ohmigod Grade 10 Math! Need Help!

I graduated from high school 15 years ago. I only have grade 10 math (I was the Humanities nerd), which I finished two years before graduating. Beyond a tortuous ill-advised macro-economics I took in university, I've not done any serious mathematics for 17 years. On Tuesday I am taking an apptitude test to get into the military (Canadian navy). I'm scared shitless.

You guys all seem to be brilliant mathematicians and I'm sure you all have absolutely brilliant ideas and suggestions on how to prepare for this thing.

Websites? Study guides? Churches to join for prayer?

Most military entrance exams stop around algebra. They're looking for bodies, not brains. If you are trying to get into officer school, that might be different. But if you're just enlisting, expect a lot of shit like 53+12=, 5*9=, 75/5= on a timed section, trying to complete as many as you can in the alloted time. Even with just basic math skills, you should be ok.

Military math requirements are like... "is this 1 missile or 2 missiles?" "can you read?" "pretend this required a protractor, could you figure out the angle of this trajectory?".

I doubt you could graduate high school and fail at anything but the absolute top end requirements for any military on earth... they're kidding when they say "the best and the brightest", you know.

Honestly, I'm gonna say what everyone is thinking:

If you can't pass 10th grade math equivalency to get into the military I don't even think Canada will want you defending them.

Dunno about Canada, but normal aptitude tests in the States don't usually get too involved with the heavier mathematics. They cover basic arithmetic, some basic algebraic word problems, and then some geometry type stuff (areas, perimeters etc). Most will even give you a sheet if you don't remember how to calculate the area of a triangle.

I don't imagine you'll be seeing much calculus for a military aptitude test.
Maybe a quick brush up of algebra basics (the rules when messing with inequalities was always a hang up of mine - switch the signs when dividing by a negative, wut?) and some geometric calculations (Pythagoras and such) and you should be fine.

But to the OP. I would recommend the Mathematics Survival kit or one of the "for dummies" books. Either option is more than enough to pass an aptitude test for our military.

I had a buddy who took something like this when he renlisted in the national guard. When handing the test backs (still in the classroom), the instructor commented publically on my friend's perfect score. The guy next to him got a 29% and didn't pass the test, and it was clear he was upset about it. My friend felt pretty smug about himself.

After class adjourns, he goes out to his car and realizes he has left his lights on, his battery is dead, and he has no jumper cables. Luckily, Mr. 29% happens to be coming out at the same time, is parked next to my friend, and jumpstarts his car with the cables he always has with him.

Sometimes, it's not all about the test scores.

i took the CFAT around 5 months ago, and though i cant tell you exactly what is on it, i can tell you that it doesnt get too hard. even if you havent done math in 17 years, if you have been doing something other than breathing and playing FFXI you will be fine.
