Is Final Fantasy perceived as being particularly popular amongst girls and homosexuals?

A couple of days ago, I was browsing gametrailers.com and decided to take a quick glance at the FF sub-forum they have on there. The first thread I see at the top of the page is entitled "Final Fantasy is for Homosexuals?". The OP's argument pretty much consists of, "FF games feature a lot of effeminate male characters and melodramatic storylines, ergo, the series must be popular with gays." That doesn't really convince me, but the thing is, it's certainly not the first time I've heard of such a suggestion being made (the suggestion being that FF has an especially large following amongst gays). I've heard similar suggestions about FF having a disproportionately large female fanbase, as well. I also read a post on here, I think it was in the FFXIV forum, where a person claimed to have a friend who lives in Japan, and said their friend told them that in Japan FF is regarded as being girly. So, is that really the perception? That it's mostly straight girls and gay guys who like FF? I'd like to hear what BG thinks about the subject.

A lot of girls I know who are super hardcore into FF are usually super hardcore into gay mangas, Japanese bands that look like women, and are bisexual so take that for what you will.
