    5th generation pokemon

Heartgold and Soulsilver hits NA next month but what about the newest generation?

    http://i50.tinypic.com/scyhah.jpg

    http://kotaku.com/5468599/pokemons-f...s-with-zoroark

Scans from the latest CoroCoro Comic out the first new Pokémon of the fifth generation, Zoroark, the monster fox Pokémon and star of the franchise's 13th animated feature, Phantom Ruler Zoroark.

First shown in silhouette during tis weekend's Pokémon Sunday in Japan, CoroCoro Comic magazine scans from across the sea have confirmed the mysterious creature as Zoroark, a monster fox Pokémon that begins life as the adorable Zorua, who is small, fluffy, and thoroughly evil, much like a Pekingese.

So technically these are the first two fifth generation Pokémon, but I never know if we should consider evolutionary forms as separate entities or parts of the same whole. Hell, I didn't even realize there were four generations for there to be a fifth of, but upon doing a little research I've figured that whole mess out.

Generation 1: Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow
Generation 2: Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal
Generation 3: Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald
Generation 4: Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
    Generation 5: Whatever is next.

I hope that clears things up.

With the revelation of Zoroark comes the true name of the upcoming 13th Pokémon movie. Originally called Pokémon: Phantom Ruler Z, it's now called Phantom Ruler Zoroark.

There've been 12 Pokémon movies? My goodness.
    I have no further comment.

I really wish they'd just stopped with RYB. Things got so, so stupid after that.

I felt that Gold and Silver went a little too far, but I still liked them. Things did indeed go too far after that, with Diamond and Pearl being the least interested I've ever been in Pokemon. But they'll never shut this shit down.

oh, I thought heartgold and soulsilver were remakes of gold and silver, like fire red and leaf green.
They gotta running out of elements and animals. shit's about to get beyond super retarded.
Though all would be forgiven for all eternity if one of the starter pokemon was Tokicat!

I'll never forgive G/S/C for introducing babies.

Beyond that, I don't think pokemon design has gotten that much worse. Gen 1 had its fair share of terrible designs, and people only remember them because of nostalgia.

I don't mind more new ones but I'm kinda annoyed with having to "lose" my hard work, what I ultimately want is a final game/central hub for everything.

I guess it's almost similar to starting a new character to play a new class in a MMORPG.

Was it ever possible to transfer G1 Pokes to the G4? I gave up on G3 and stopped, but kept my eye on it as I enjoy the competive scene in Pokemon. While I remember it being possible, didn't one need to buy a large array of consoles/accesories/games in order to do so?

Our stores are of course making a huge deal over this launch, simply b/c pokemon still sells like crack cocaine. Had a freind look up trading from G1-G4. Its a clusterfuck mess and not worth the trouble. Most of what you would want from the G1 can be found in other Gs, (actually i think everything can, including mew)

I asked a manager who is still really into this to explain why they are remaking G/S and why people consider G/S the best in the series. After exhausting nearly a hour just explaining how they developed the progression system with the Pokemon, I can see why people love these 2 over all in the series. Its his personal favorite, and the favorites of many of the fans coming in and preording the game.

And ya, Im going to try the silver version. Getting bored with PSU and this would be my first real dive into the series since I completed everything in Red

So it is indeed a clusterfuck.... but I actually forgot about Fire Red/etc to transfer stuff from, my bad.

Any footnotes from your manager? From what my own memories G/S rebalanced stuff and introduced moves to make tactical play much more fun (rather than using a high base damage attack to 2 shot most things), as well as breeding (I caught a shiny ditto so I used that to pump out a few shiny pokes).

Oh hell, of course it's another canine thing. First Lucario is introduced with his own movie, now this...thing.
I'm not really mad, would just like a different looking new pokemon as a star to introduce a new generation.

It was never possible to transfer from R/B/Y or G/S/C to G3 or 4. It was possible to obtain all G1 and G2 pokemon in G3, but it required you to get Pokemon XD and Coliseum for the Gamecube and I think both FireRed and LeafGreen. G3 and G4 are compatible though, so if you got everything in G3 you don't need anything but D/P to complete G4.

As for why most people fondly remember G/S/C as the best of the series, a lot of it has to do with dramatically rebalancing the game. As I'm sure anyone who played R/B/Y remembers, Psychic types > everyone. Their only weakness was bug, and the bug moves were so weak that even a non-super effective attack would usually do more damage to a Psychic type. As well the only type that resisted Psychic was Psychic itself.

G/S/C introduced 2 new types, Dark which was immune to psychic and super-effective against it, and Steel which was resistant to it. You also got better Bug moves like Silverwind and Megahorn that could actually damage psychics, and ghost attacks were made super-effective against psychics as well (the manuals for R/B/Y said Ghost > Psychic.. but if you actually tried to use Lick on a psychic it'd do no damage, they fixed that in G2).

G/S/C also split Special into Special Attack and Special Defense, which weakened pokemon like Allakazham's defensive abilities, while raising pokemon like Hitmonlee's. G/S/C also fixed a lot of errors in the code, like Focus Energy lowering your critical hit rate instead of increasing it, and fixed the incredibly broke "High Critical Hit" rate moves which had roughly a 95% crit rate in R/B/Y.

tldr: I'm a nerd, and the reason G/S/C > R/B/Y is that pokemon other than Mewtwo and Allakazham got to have a little fun once in a while.

He spent a lot of time talking about how they clearly defined what stats progressed on the pokemon after each battle and when they are born or caught. There is more of a ryhm and reason for each moment of progress. E.G. of why this is important: If you wanted to boost a particular base stat, you could actually focus your efforts to do so.

He also talked about the introduction of new types to help balance the games (seriously R/B was stupid easy with Mewtwo. If you some how managed to kill mine off, Allakhzam finished the rest off) Iirc there was "Steel" types and "Dark" pokemon.

Seemed like the greatest source of chance in pokemon development was only in the breeding, and naturally, in the catching of pokemon. I vaguely remember him talking about a "hidden" stat but honestly don't know any of the details on that.

I don't plan on doing tournament but he talked about how over powered legendaries were and still are, so they are illegal in most.

And now with the networking of the DS, you can trade via wifi and pretty much get w/e u want.

BTW, I vaguely remember on one of the other Gs that you could revisit the old world of R/B. Was that Gold/Silver?

Yep, G/S was the first game to open up the old world.

The hidden values your manager spoke about determines the stat growth rates. Depending on the final figure, it would be used to determine how powerful your poke will be at 100.

Legendaries are seriously boring though so it's only fair if they ban them. Not only in power but since if they're not banned everyone uses them pretty much.

I recall in 2002 I attended a Pokemon event in London (free celebis, and there was a tournament thing going on but first come first serve, I got their late and couldn't enter) with a team of none-legendaries, my glory moment was that my Umbreon was able to solo everyone that was there, granted I'm a bit older than the 6-man-legendary teams that most kids there used, but because my Umbreon rendered Psychic moves useless, I was able to basically wipe the floor with their pokes.

Some may be familiar with my moveset, but it was basically Curse, Moonlight, Double Edge and Rest. At that time, or maybe just the kids, were so focused on one shotting you, every round I powered up my umbreon 6 times with Curse (buffs Attack/DEF at the cost of own HP), coupled with the use of Moonlight and Rest, and the "leftovers" attachment, I was able to become invincible. As umbreon has good special defense, and large HP pool, it was impossible to 3 shot it with extremely powerful (special) moves. But by the time I was fully buffed, Double Edge will one shot anything more or less. I guess technically the people there were too dumb to understand what I was doing and of course every Pokes of theirs were lined up with attack moves only.

But as suspected, your manager also thinks along the same lines as I do, where balance was brought into the game and not every match was a one shot fest with Alla/Mew2.

    Fun days.....

You thought right, they are. This is talking about a game that probably doesn't have a name yet.

I got platinum last summer thinking it would be fun to competitively battle online, only to find out to actually have good pokemon you need to sink MANY hours.

If you have any desire to do this, just save your time and download Shoddy Battle. Shoddy battle is a simple program that allows you to build a team with anyone you want with the right hidden stats you want and the right nature you want etc... It's pretty addictive, but the learning curve is kind of steep.

Gold and Silver (and Crystal) were by far the best of the series in my opinion. They introduced so many new features from the previous generation (day/night system in particular - ADORE this system in any game. I don't know why, but I can't get enough of it). The game world was huge, there was a second world with new challenges after the first (Elite Four not being the "end of the road"), appearance of Red/Ash which was quite cool given I watched the anime at the time...

I can just remember so much time spent playing that generation to death with my friends. Every friday(I think it was?) going and getting a Lapras etc. R/Y/B were quite fun but flawed (and a bit shallow overall), Ruby and Sapphire were nice but also short, and I haven't really played through Pearl/Diamond much

I think a nice step forward would be instead of just duelling/trading with other people, to actually have them in your world (sort of MMORPG style) - would just add a hell of a lot of fun imo.

All those reasons are exactly why G/S/C is the best. Pearl/Diamond is just about as short as the other two short ones. I don't know why they introduced that awesome idea of having a second island and then never really did it again. I like the idea of having a second tier of gym leaders and elite four. Hell, I wouldn't mind if they had three tiers of each going up to level 90. It's kind of bogus that in most of the games the max trainer pkmn's level is around 65-70.

New Pokes look gay, but the new ones always look gay.

Gold/Silver is the best gen ever. My ability to like this gen is determined on if you can go to old areas or not, because thats something that shouldn't of been taken away with RuSa (along with everything else that made Pokemon enjoyable in that generation).

Loved G/S because you could get 16 badges, fuck yeah!

All the next gen games seemd too short or full of overcomplicated unneccesary stuff. They also introduced more and more event-only pokemons and legendarys without the chance to catch previous legendarys. So it was just way too much work or just imposible to actualy complete the poke-dex.

In the end i will still play all future pokemon games just cause i like the basic system and it's gotten kinda part of my life <.>

Still waiting for 3D Pokemon or even 3D MMO though.

Let me know if the 5th generation game doesn't require me to fight 100 zubats and geodudes in a cave.
