    Scholarships

So, after dicking around for years I finally find myself in a position to go finish my bachelor's in the fall. Probably in either Physics or Engineering (same school offers some fantastic graduate programs that I'm looking into also)

I have some scholarships available to me from Phi Theta Kappa (2yr school honors bullshit) and some from MA 2yr school transfer agreement (straight -xxx$ off tuition because of high GPA, not scholarship)

I'm at a loss as to where to look into independent scholarships or how to apply for them. If I really want to take my education as far as I plan to (masters at the least) then I'm going to need a better way to pay for school, lol. Any suggestions / links that apply would be fantastic.

    --

    Somewhat secondary question:

Because I dicked off so much when I was younger my GPA from my first few years of college is like a 1.5 cumulative (shit ton of F's from not showing up mixed in with all A's in classes I like.) When it comes to transferring for a degree, if I want to use the A I got in let's say...biology and molecular biology to fulfill an extraneous science requirement will I have to allow the integration of my overall GPA from that school or will I be allowed to transfer those select classes and the attached GPA only?

Taking only the work I've done in the past year and a half I have a 3.8 GPA but in order to skip another 6 months of school and transfer for the fall I'd have to incorporate some of the credits I acquired in between my fucking around. Wasn't sure if this was possible or not?

    To answer the first question:

In my own experience, the easiest place to find physics scholarships is through the department itself. See if there's anything available. At the time I applied for mine, there were two awards left and two applicants.

For most scholarships that aren't connected to the school, it's too late to apply (deadlines are Jan1~Mar1, for the most part). Start looking at around November 2010 to prepare for the Fall 2011/Spring 2012 school year.

Also, it would really really help if you could become a minority before applying. I'd personally suggest being black, but Hispanic works well too.

I'm half portuguese but look 110% and live in a primarily portuguese community where the amount of successful portuguese is extremely low. I will be playing the race card this time.

    Shameless? Hell yeah.

    Well in that case

    http://www.aps.org/programs/minoriti...s/scholarship/

Though you've already missed the deadline. You can apply next year though. There's this other one for like 14k if you want to go into geophysics (well, you don't really *have* to go into geophysics. They'll give it to anyone in a STEM major). It's not a minority scholarship, but being a minority usually increases your chances. I'll see if I can find it (though it's past the deadline again).

    Edit: http://www.seg.org/SEGportalWEBproje...pageLabel=home

I can't think of any others off the top of my head. Like I said, your best chances is to look at the ones through your school specifically.

Edit 2: And I have no clue how to answer your second question. Couldn't you call the school to ask them about it?

I'm making an appointment with counselor at my CC for early next week I just didn't know if I could get an answer early since I'm currently jumping through hoops trying to gather all my transcripts from schools that I may not want to transfer anything from if it means incorporating the full GPA.

Figured I could save myself some hassle if anyone knew the answer to #2

You'll be able to get a lot just for this. Be glad you're not white, it really sucks for scholarships...

When I transferred from one 4-year school to another after two years, my classes and credits transferred to fill requirements at the new school, but the grades from those classes (good or bad) did not transfer. My degree and corresponding GPA were solely from the new classes I took at the new school.

No joke, don't know how you feel about it, but you could join the military. If you got your engineering degree, and signed up for 6 years, you could join EOD, and disarm bombs with me ^^ We sorta need people as there's lots of bombs that people seem to be trying to kill us with.

Would rather light my dick on fire than serve in the US armed forces tbh.

This is the common practice, but it's really a school by school policy.

Kinda sucks tbh, rewards people who did bad and can punish those who did well(like I went to one school with mostly As for 3 semesters and then transferred my senior year, and only graduated with a 3.2 because a single C+ in a really hard class has huge weight when you only have 8-10 grades instead of 40-60).

This has me hopeful since I care very little about my 2 year degree other than it being above a 3.0 GPA (gets me like ~$2,000 off tuition automatically if I continue to go to school in MA)

Usually transferring in credits depends on the department, rather than the school as a whole. I wish I could transfer in my old GPA (~3.6) as it was at an extremely tough school with well-known academic standards. Whereas the school I transferred to was a crappy state school that I didnt give a shit about when I started and subsequently shot my GPA to hell (~2.8 now).

Applying for a Writing Course waiver I just needed an official transcript showing I got a B or higher in whatever course I wanted to sub in, plus a syllabus showing that the workload is at least comparable.

In response to the second question, it varies by school. In my experience, all your previous courses will be evaluated and compared to courses offered at the school you're transferring to. If there's something comparable, you may get credit for that class; if there isn't, you may get credit for it as an elective or simply not at all. I doubt you can pick and choose which courses you want to try and transfer.

There's usually a certain grade you had to have achieved in a class for it to be considered for transfer credit, but only the credits will be transferred and not the grade. But again, this varies by school.

If you're looking for the quantity over quality, try www.fastweb.com

You'll have to withstand tons of advertisement and bullshit but it's the standard that highschools give out
