Obama set to introduce offshore oil proposal

The proposal aims to reduce US dependence on foreign oil
US President Barack Obama is set to announce plans to open huge offshore areas on the US coastline to oil and natural gas drilling.

The move will end a long-standing ban on such drilling along the Atlantic coast, in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and off the north coast of Alaska.

The plan aims to reduce US dependence on foreign oil and generate revenue from the sale of offshore leases.

Environmentalists say the proposal is not worth the environmental risks.

They say there is a relatively little oil to be found in the offshore areas.

Early in his presidency, Mr Obama said US reliance on foreign oil posed a threat.

Outlining his energy priorities, he said the country would not be held "hostage to dwindling resources, hostile regimes, and a warming planet".

He called for greater fuel efficiency and an "energy economy" aimed at creating millions of jobs.

Someone remind me why everyone's panties were in a twist when Dubbya wanted to do this several years ago. I can't remember.

Also, back when this was a Bush Jr. thing, I thought I read that start to finish, this sort of thing was a ten-year deal. We wouldn't see any impact or return on our investment for 10 years or something.

As far as I can remember, it was going to take 10 years and millions (billions?) of dollars before a single drop of oil made it's way into the marketplace, and required the price of oil to be quite high to make any economic sense at all. Nevermind the obvious environmental concerns and the diversion this would create away from the development of clean energy alternatives.

Pretty sure Dubya's aim was to open up restricted land in Alaska to be drilled, along with the offshore drilling. This is clearly just offshore drilling.

Still, it takes forever to build an oil rig in the middle of the ocean. Won't see anything until Obama is long gone.

Yea, mixed feelings about this one. It has the potential to be good, and the potential to blow up in our face. I could have sworn one of his campaign ideas was to reduce our dependency on oil overall, not reduce our need for foreign oil.

I guess part of the reasoning is to get support for a climate change & energy bill in congress. Still, kinda annoyed by this. All of these energy things take for fucking ever though. Nuclear plants take a fair amount of time to get up and running too afaik.
