Hard drive spin up/lock up

So, about every hourish one of my secondary hard drives will spin up and cause my computer to lock up for ~5 seconds. Doing a google search i come up with this solution.

Set your hard drives to not spin down. Power options, more options, turn off hard disks after, never.

This sounds like a horrible idea. It is just a back up storage drive though (Just lots of data backed up. no programs are on it.) I don't wana prematurely wear out my drive by never spinning it down though.

So people of BG, is there a better solution cause this is starting to piss me off.

i have the same issue, theoretically setting them to never turn off shouldn't wear anything down as they are not actually being accessed which would cause the wear? could be entirely wrong, im not a HDD expert, but i'll be using the method to stop it.

It won't wear them down, HDDs are made to always be spinning, spin down was made for laptops to save energy however even for that it fails, since restarting a HDD uses more energy than keeping it spinning.

What the above said. This is actually part of my: "must do this before I use computer after a reinstall" checklist. Next to Hibernation, Mouse Accel, and a few other default profile annoyances.
