Texas schools board rewrites US history with lessons promoting God and guns

Cynthia Dunbar does not have a high regard for her local schools. She has called them unconstitutional, tyrannical and tools of perversion. The conservative Texas lawyer has even likened sending children to her state's schools to "throwing them in to the enemy's flames". Her hostility runs so deep that she educated her own offspring at home and at private Christian establishments.

Now Dunbar is on the brink of fulfilling a promise to change all that, or at least point Texas schools toward salvation. She is one of a clutch of Christian evangelists and social conservatives who have grasped control of the state's education board. This week they are expected to force through a new curriculum that is likely to shift what millions of American schoolchildren far beyond Texas learn about their history.

The board is to vote on a sweeping purge of alleged liberal bias in Texas school textbooks in favour of what Dunbar says really matters: a belief in America as a nation chosen by God as a beacon to the world, and free enterprise as the cornerstone of liberty and democracy.
Oh, what fresh hell is this.

I need to leave this thread before I rage so hard I puke.

so sick of people who think that because the truth of the world doesn't fit their viewpoint, the world is biased. and I'm not saying liberal bias is a myth - fuck you, cnn.com - but there's a difference between honest-to-god liberal bias and simple truth that happens to be progressive.

I'm smelling something fishy here, though. the article seems to be a bit sensational. I can't see anyone getting away with changing the curriculum to include "a belief in America as a nation chosen by God as a beacon to the world," without violating the Constitution.

The bigger issue here is that Texas is the largest producer of all high school textbooks. If Texas passes this change in school textbooks, not only with Texas high schools be affected, but a majority of high schools throughout the nation.

This article sums it up pretty well. Now, history lessons will have a conservative spin on them, and the U.S. will be shown in a more positive light, showcasing capitalism and secular beliefs as the core of American society.

I'm surprised given how many times this has come up in the past 3 years (creationism shit, etc) that people don't understand yet how much Texas impacts the rest of the country.

"If you don't like America you can GET OUT," will no longer be a slogan, but national policy.

I'm almost certain the last time this came up someone posted another article talking about how the only places that would actually go for the "New Texas Standard" books would be states that want them, the rest would still have plenty of readily available options, especially due to California's impact.

You honestly, as an American, think that sidelining Thomas Jefferson and skipping over the slavetrade, which is an integral part of our history as a people and culture, is a good idea?

America stands for more than just what some people believe. America stands as a triumph of overcoming adversity, forward progress, and freedom. Even if we don't always live up to our own standards.

The history of America isn't pretty, but without it we wouldn't be the nation we are today. Dismissing it because we don't like it is about as un-American as you can possibly get. How YOU of all people can even humor this is unfathomable.

Revising history to suit your needs is facist, not capitalistic nor democratic.

Sure, soon as you let us try universal government health insurance to measure its pros and cons actively.
