    Another Shaving Thread (Products, etc...)

Unlike the other thread, this one isn't about "what you shave" so much as it is "what you shave with". Specifically, for your face.

For shaving cream, I have gotten the best results with Edge Sensitive Skin Shaving Gel.

For razors, I use a Gillette Fusion Power - which *usually* works out great, but can cause irritation if I don't get at least some significant stubble before I shave next, especially on my neck, jawline and mustache area.

Typically shave in the shower, for easier cleanup, quick facial moisturization, and such.

The major downfall of Fusion Power is the blades seem to get "rough" kind of quickly, and the blue strip wears out fast. If I shave everyday, my face gets it's ass kicked after 3-5 days of daily shaving. If I don't, I start to look like a dirty Mexican.

Curious if anything beats out Fusion Power... Schick has a new razor, the Hydro. Anyone have experiences with that? Maybe an electric razor is better? I have no experience with electric...

Also, for those that use facial scrubs or pore cleansers, before or after shaving?

Oh, and I tried Bump Patrol for irritation, once, but didn't give it much of a chance when I realized it smells like ASS.

Interested in stuff that works good, etc...

Under no circumstances would I ever use a facial scrub or anything that's rough on your skin before shaving, as it'll just add to the irritation you get even from a fresh razor. If anything I'd use an exfoliant at night before bed, and even then never more than 1-2x per week and only if my skin was really dry. Guys tend to overdo it when it comes to skin, not realizing that something as seemingly innocuous as washing your face 3-4x per day can lead to your skin overproducing oil to compensate and increasing breakouts and irritation.

I've had lots of good results with a good wet electric, that lets me use shave gel and just buy replacement blades every 6 months - 1 year. If you take decent care of it and make sure you rinse it out after you use it, and clean with rubbing alcohol every once in a while, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to use one unless you have really, really sensitive skin. But if you're interested in disposables you'll have to ask someone else.

Also Bump Patrol just smells like alcohol, with maybe a hint of salacylic acid (the stuff in acne medicines). Honestly that product is a godsend. It's marketed as an aftershave for black guys but I use it as an aftershave, occasional astringent, as well as a spot blemish treatment. You're going to get a smell like that with virtually any alcohol-based aftershave, unless you buy something scented.

Also you (and all guys, regardless of how they shave) should be using a good moisturizing cream at least 1-2x a day. Find a good one that doesn't make your skin feel greasy and doesn't make you break out, and try to find one with SPF 15 to protect your skin from long-term sun damage. Almost no guys moisturize and it's probably the single easiest way to improve your complexion short of quitting smoking. Everyone's skin is different, but I really like Aveeno Ultra-Calming. Also almost no one breaks out on Clinique, but it's kinda expensive (coupled with the shame of buying it in the Macy's cosmetics department, lol).

edit: also Bump Patrol makes an excellent shave gel for sensitive skin, in addition to their line of aftershaves. It doesn't smell like the aftershave if that's a concern, and it works really well to cut down on redness/irritation. Nivea for men Sensitive works well too, as does Everyman Jack (available at target).

also protip: if you have excessive redness after shaving and you have a hot date coming up you can put a little visine on it, it seems to make the redness go away a lot faster.

I have had severe problems with shaving ever since I was forced to start. I have extremely coarse hair, and very sensitive skin, which means that I almost always have irritation from shaving. I find that, paradoxically, the more often I shave, the less irritated my skin is, however there are several factors involved. I have to use new or nearly new razorblades quite often. I max the use at around 5-6 days to a razorblade (which is super expensive compared to my friends who use the same blade for what seems like months!). Also, I dont' use any chemicals on my facial skin, save for shaving foam. I prefer foam to gel these days as well, as I was getting irritation from some gels intermittently and got fed up with that (even though the shave was a bit better, to be fair). Also, I never use an electric razor. I've not found any that can both cut my coarse hairs without pulling or missing and not give me crazy razor bumps (thank you sharp chin). I don't get bad bumps from traditional razors, but electrics give me the worst bumps...

When I shave my balls I like to use Anthony Logistics Shave Gel. Aloe beads soothe, Glycerin lubricates, Sea Kelp prevents inflammation, Slippery Elm soothes. Softens and preps the skin for shaving. It also leaves your balls feeling extremely refreshed from the healthy dose of menthol.

I follow up with a light weight facial moisturizer by Clinique (Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel). This helps restore moisture and sooth my balls after being swiped with a razor in every direction.

My sack feel so soft and smooth when I am done. Best feeling ever.

For shaving cream I use this:
    http://www.allure.com/images/beauty/...ody_aveeno.jpg
The whole line of Aveeno shaving gels are wonderful, but I prefer this one even though I don't have dry skin. The oatmeal in it really soothes the skin, and I've noticed it softens my skin and I get a lot closer shave with it. Definitely more expensive (and smaller) than other shave gels, but it's worth it.

For a razor, I actually use the generic TopCare imitation of the Gillette Fusion. They upgraded it to look like the Fusion, but the black & orange model is what I use. From the first use, this razor gives me the better shaves than any name brand razors. No sensation of pulling/pinching, and super close.

Shave foam, for the most part, is obsolete in my mind. Its gel all the way for me. Also I usually don't buy the name brand shavers/refills. I buy the disposable razors with at least 3 blades. Anything less feels like its a rougher shave.

I can vouch for Aveeno's shave gel (for sensitive skin). The oatmeal really is nice. Even though there is "no added fragrance", it has a nice smell.

Aveeno products are pretty much amazing for skin care, their face wash is extremely gentle and won't overdry, and their line of moisturizers are just as hypo-allergenic as clinique but less than half the price. Not to mention most of them have little to no fragrance, so guys can use them without smelling like an old lady's purse.

also you can find a lot of these at target, but the Everyman Jack line of men's skin care/shaving products are pretty amazing, especially their fragrance free salacylic acid wash and classic mint shave gel. They're also very reasonably priced. You can order online as well here:

They make a citrus scrub body soap that is pretty awesome, like a manly, deep/rich orange smell. I think you can get shampoo with the same scent.

Classic Barbeshops still use the warm foam for a shave. The barber I goto every weekend for a face shave is amazing. Makes you feel all relaxed and nice..as relaxed as its possible to be with a straight razor near your neck anyway

this is what I use, works really well especially with a wet electric

has anyone tried the Burt's Bees for Men shaving products? I know they make a shave gel and an aftershave at least, I've used their bar soap which is fantastic (although expensive)

So my usual routine is a bit complicated and I'm unsure about the proper order really. I start with washing my face in the shower with proactiv BP crystal bullshit > shave > proactiv oil reducer > proactiv benzperoxide lotion > gel based moisturizer. Now I went out and picked up bump patrol but where should I work it in? Should my routine be modified at all?

Bump Patrol is primarily an aftershave, so I'd splash a little on your face immediately after shaving, and before your oil reducer. It stings for a second (as do all alcohol aftershaves), I like to think of it as the alcohol killing off any bacteria left over from my razor although that's probably not entirely accurate.

You can also dab it on pimples/blemishes throughout the day, although be sure not to put on too much (or at least spread it/rub it in) as it dries blue if you leave a large pool of it on your skin.

Remember not to overdo it with alcohol if you have problem skin though, too much will kill off skin infections, but it's the equivalent of carpet-bombing your face, killing off healthy cells and the immune system cells that fight infection. Overdrying will also lead to more oilyness, and thus more breakouts. I wouldn't use it more than once or twice a day.
