    System process eating CPU

No, not the system idle process. The actual system process, the kernel. This is windows 7 64-bit, core2 duo with 6gb of ram, a desktop system. At totally random intervals, the system process will suddenly start using 50% of the cpu, evenly on both cores, with no increase in ram usage. It will do this while the system is totally idle or when it's in use, it causes extreme stuttering and lag when something (ie, a game) is using the other 50% of the cpu. I've tried using a process monitor program and couldn't see anything obviously wrong. This is a brand new install of w7, so viruses and spyware are out of the question. Drivers are up to date, all windows updates applied.

    I'm stumped.

It does this when windows checks for updates, could be part of the issue. It's most noticeable right after start-up I believe.

Well it sounds like some kind of service windows might be running hogging all the CPU but you mentioned you used a process monitor program.

Which one exactly? I was actually going to recommend one to help you determine what exactly is the problem. If it's sysinternals process explorer then I can't help you, although it does break down everything really well. It's like task manager on steroids. I suggest everyone dl it.

Should probably add it to the list of free apps/utilities if it already isn't <.<

Update: When this happens, if I close vent the problem immediately goes away. I can start vent back up right away and it won't come back...so, yeah. XP I have a fix now I guess, but that's a very strange problem.
