    Cigar Humidor

    Hello all,

In the past I have seen some of the posters smoke cigars and I am in search of getting myself a humidor. Up until recently I never kept more than 5 on hand and was able to keep them in a little travel humidor.

I checked around Cigars International and cheaphumidors but I am not really sure what to get. I probably don't need anything more than 50 capacity at the moment. I can get all the supplies/liquids for it locally since I work 5 minutes away from J&R.

I did fine this on ebay, is this any good at all?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...%3DI%26otn%3D2

    Any help is appreciated!

I think most people who smoke cigars here... or in general nowadays don't actually smoke the cigar, but use the paper for something else..(or atleast I do, and have noticed.)

    Far from it.

People who smoke REAL cigars (that cost upwards of $30/ea.) aren't simply gutting them and using em for pot.

That's what cheap shit cigars are for.

That being said, I built my own humidor. Prior to that though, you can get little kits that you can use to turn a wooded cigar box into a mini-humidor. Those work pretty well ime.

Building them is a fairly simple process if you have the tools and the time. The skill-set needed for such a project is very basic.

Noob cigar question, but I ordered some nice cigars a friend recommended a while back and they came in their own wooden box and were each in individual glass/plastic containers. Do I need to take them out and put them in a humidor?

Those are semi-airtight tubes. They are usually ok, but it depends on how long they are being stored.

What I do for those kinds of cigars is throw a small container of "Humidor Beads" in the box, and take the caps off the cigar tubes. They are cheap, and easily found (just google em).

It isn't as high-tech, and exact as a commercially built humidor..... but it's good enough if you just have 1 small box of cigars.

If it's going to take him more than 1-2 months to smoke the box he has...... get the humidor beads. That should hold him off for another 6 months. The whole box should easily be smoked by then.

Pro-Tip: The humidor beads works well with pot also.

The humidor just keeps them from drying out right?

What's the life span on most cigars? (I only smoke like one a week or 2 >.>).

Depends on the cigar and storage method used, but some can last many years.

In a proper humidor... some can definitely last years.

Those semi-air tight packaged cigars 6 months maybe? That may even be pushing it.

Cigars just left to the open air..... 3 weeks tops.

You can tell when they are bad. The get extremely brittle, smoke extremely fast, and the taste just isn't correct.

If you get them too moist.... they will taste almost acidic. You also will more than likely be smoking mold lol.

Cigars getting too moist is nearly impossible without a humidor. It mainly comes from a fucked up humidifier.

and you'll know because they'll split from too much moisture. You want the cigar to have a slight oil on the wrapper when you go to smoke it. Usually if I forget to add distilled water to my smaller humidor and I don't remember until I want to smoke I'll take a bit of crown and a (new) sponge, moisten the sponge and wipe the outside and the put a few drops on the tip. Do that with some cheap cigars also and it really makes a difference.

as for the topic of a humidor it is so much easier and cheaper to buy one than make one if you are under 300~ cigars. Sure there is a satisfaction in building your own but that takes time and finding spanish cedar is somewhat a chore. I one day would like to convert a closet or bedroom in a house into a humidor, but I don't go through/keep that many cigars to necessitate that at this time.

Thanks all for the suggestions...turns out I am only about an hour and change away from Cigars International so I am going to head out there this weekend and see what they have. Figured I could pick some more cigars up while I am out there anyway and it's right in the downtown area of Bethlehem.

I bought a Cohiba in Antigua when I was ~8 that was in my room on my bedside table in a glass until I was about 20 when I decided for some reason it might be a good idea to smoke it; it was not. By superior deductive reasoning, I'd say they last less than 12 years.

I just avoid Cohiba's entirely. Too many fakes/ripoffs flying around. And the real ones aren't worth sifting through all the shit to get to.
