New build - intel core i7 930 temp problems?

    Hey guys,

A question to all those who have recently built an i7 system.

Im having a heating issue with my new build (I think). My CPU temp is 50 C at IDLE and under load(only 30%, not even 100%) it reaches 70-75 C. The ambient(room) temperature is around 18 C. The inside of the case and all other components are cool - the only thing running hot is my CPU.

Im running stock cooling and not overclocking. Are these expected temperatures?

I used the thermal paste that came applied on the stock cooling. I'm going to pick up some new thermal paste and most likely a Cooler Master Hyper 212+, but before I do I just want to make sure that these are average temperatures out of the box.

I spoke with intel and they said that anything under 80 degrees is "nominal".

Long story short, to anyone who has recently bought an i7 running stock cooling - what temperatures do you see?

On my box at home with an i7 930, I get ~35C at idle using a Cooler Master n520 heatsink. The temperature of my office is right around 25C. I'm also using a Cooler Master HAF 932 case with tons of air flow.

I haven't used stock cooling on mine but those temps seem very high. What is the ambient temp in the room you are running it in? Also, did you put on the CPU yourself? If so, did you use thermal compound or just go with the stock?
If you went with thermal compound did you put a lot on, use a credit card/razor blade to apply it thinly and evenly?
Generally, when I get a temp that I'm not happy with I just remount my cooler. It would be a worthwhile investment to get an aftermarket cooler though, there are some good options in the 20s even, coolermaster has a pretty sweet and inexpensive cooler.

Stock on an i7 930 I was getting around 38-39C idle, on loads I have no idea, never stress tested it with stock cooler.

Just got done installing mine also, but using a Noctua D14

    Speedfan says the following:

    Temp1: 22C
    Temp2: 51C
    Temp3 : 27C
    Core 0: 22C
    Core 1:22C
    Core 2:21C
    Core 3:22C
    Core 4:23C
    Core 5:23C

Mobo says 22C. Anything I should worry about?

What is temp 2 supposed to be, case temp? I never really gave a shit about that, as long as cpu/gpu is cool. There should be alot of hot air blowing around the case, 51C is fine if it's just the general temp inside the case.

51C sounds like GPU temp. General case temp should be half of that or less.

GPU-Z says my gpu is 39-43C, so I don't think it's that. I heard it might be the chipset? It's stuck between the bigass Noctua and the gpu so I don't know what I can do to it

edit: I think this is the culprit
    Spoiler: show

Tried to move the gpu afterwards

no drop in temp as far as I know.

I guess I should buy a case side fan?

I recommend zalman coolers. Got a CNPS7000C-Cu for my Q6600 and it brought the temperature under full load from 75C down to 60C. And it's quiet.

    Im running stock cooling
Low 70's on full load sounds normal for stock cooler(it sucks). Idle is 0%, not 30%. So I'm guessing at 0% you're closer to 40c than 50? If so those are about normal. Your temps should go down if you just get a new cooler.

With the 920/930 until you start reaching 90+ you don't have anything to worry about at all. Lower is still better though, of course.

thanks for all the replies. its reassuring to know that this is pretty normal. i cant believe intel would give a stock cooler that can hardly handle a full load on the cpu.

i'll be getting a new cooler next friday. the temperatures seem to have decreased a bit, i guess my thermal paste hadnt fully spread yet. im now at 42C idle and 55C under 30% load(modern warfare2/sc2). i havent dared to try a stress test as im pretty sure ill get to the 90s.

If you test with Prime95 you can at least immediately stop the test should the temperatures get too high. I did a stress test with Prime95 and was hovering 63C-66C at 100% load (after 25 minutes), so I'm guessing that's a good result.
