Attn: Southerners (Okay, recipes in general)

Figured I could make a whole thread for this considering we crawl out of the woodwork every time food is mentioned and can somehow derail threads about visiting Chicago into discussions about BBQ (western Carolina being the best, there, I said it).

Anyway, I'm on this crazy Susie homemaker kick, makin' shit from scratch. What I want to know is, what's your special recipe for sweet tea? Or any other special southern food item that you love? Crockpot pulled pork, slaw, whatever it is that tastes like home to you, gimme recipes!

My girlfriend and I just moved to TX under a year ago. She's learning how to cook Southern and we've tried most of the recipes listed here:

    http://www.southernliving.com/food/e...49/page20.html

They can be made pretty fast and they have all tasted good, some better than others. Favorites have been the BBQ Pork Quesadillas and the Snappy Smothered Chicken

While we're on recipes and since I give not a fuck about Isladar's horrid desire to have terrible drinks and food, does anyone have a good recipe for beef pot roast?

If you do try any soups or stews replace any water with stock. One of the best things about it starting to get cold is i have an excuse to make Beef Stew. Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup made with Chicken Stock is great to.

A slowcooker/crockpot is a really good way to cook stuff also. Beans are especially good when cooked in a slow cooker but you can find recipes for just about anything made in a slowcooker

I do mine in a slow cooker, but you can adjust with a low-temp oven and a large pot.

Buy pot roast. Seriously, just waltz up to the meat counter and ask for one. Trim off excess fat and lightly brown. Dredge in flour. Season to taste: I usually go with a small bit of rosemary, thyme, s+p; some people like oregano. It's all up to you. If you're preparing it in a slowcooker, cut up potatos and turnips and place at the bottom, then your meat, then onions, carrots, celery. Any vegetable that strikes your fancy, really. Add about a quarter to one half cup beef stock or beef bouillon, cook on low for about 6 - 8 hours.

If you're doing it in the oven use a bit more stock, and baste every fifteen minutes until done. Serve over egg noodles.

Basically. The real southern food will kill you. There's nothin really too hard to make in the south and you will be hard pressed to get some authentic soul food family recipe off anyone lol

Sweet tea southern style? 5 tea bags and a cup of sugar(or more if you ain't scurred of diabetes). I'm a cracker, so I can't make soul food, but my mom is all about frugal shit and food from scratch is where its at. Good time to start making your own shit, tastes better, healthier, cheaper, you can't go wrong.

Its not southern, but homemade pizza is a must have for homemade recipes. I forgot the recipe for the dough, but you could buy pillsbury cans. Then get some Prego sauce with the sausage in it, pepperoni, fresh veggies, package of shredded mozz, in that order = grease-free thick crust that serves 6 easy in 30min(minus homemade dough prep). Fuck a Papa Johns!

It occurred to me right after I asked that there is no universe that exists where a version of me would know what the fuck the people answering my question were saying.

Easier solution: Where has good ready made pot roasts?

If you want fucking good pulled pork smoke it on this bad boy. We do something 2-3 times a week. Even with cheap meat every so often it tastes fucking godly.

Barbaque is whole nother animal son. There's so many different styles, but I highly reccomend Steven Raichlen's stuff. The dude has the simplest, yet delicious recipes that have a unique flare to them.

    Sun Sweet tea:

1 Gallon clear plastic container and 20 tea bags (lipton is ok but whatever suits you).

Fill the container with -cold- water. Then tie off the strings of the bag and set them in the water and cover. Set out in the -Sun- for 24 hours (obviously it's dark sometimes during a 24 hour period depending on where you are, so 2 days of sun exposure should be enough). Remove from sun and chill in fridge. No need to add sugar; the suns rays magically sweeten the tea so you don't need it.

    Southern Collard Greens:

1lb Fresh Collard Greens or Kale (Mustard Greens if you want more flavor).
Turkey Neck Bone (From the butcher or you can just chop off your own)
    Salt/Pepper/Allspice
    1/2 lemon
    Large Stewing pot

Place greens in pot and rinse thoroughly. Dump out excess water and refill with cold water till the tops of the leaves are covered. Stick in turkey neck bone and add 1 tbs of salt and 1 tbs of pepper. Squeeze in lemon and cover (optional). Cook for 12 hours on low heat or until greens are tender. Serve with Mashed Potatoes and lot's of hot sauce or vinegar.

My wife is black and we traditionally go to her parents house for any big holiday that serves big meals (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays, etc.) If you need more cooking tips etc, i'll get some recepies from her and post em.

Sun sweet tea is a new one on me. Not really southern since people in the south go through tea like nobody's business and holy shit @20 tea bags for 1 gal, but sounds interesting.
