    Austin Eateries?

    I met a girl at Austin City Limits (ACL) and we're hooking up pretty well so far. I want to ask if any of you guys know some good places to eat in downtown Austin or that area that are:

    A) Somewhat healthy, she's apparently watching what she eats.
    B) Not wallet breaking (<15$ before tax for one)

    Sorry BG, no pics of her yet.

    Let's see, at that price range..
    There's Thai Passion (on 7th between Colorado and Congress). We used to get that to go a lot since it's pretty cheap and to go always felt like bigger proportions.
    If you're going out late, there's Piranha's (On 3rd and Trinity I think) reverse happy from 11-12 I believe.
    Garage Mahal is an Indian place off Rainey. I think they've got weird hours, but we've gone there a few times for dinner since it was walking distance. Depending on when you go, there might be a lot of hipsters there..
    Athenian Grill (now on Colorado and 6th I think) used to be under that price range, but everything has gone up a few dollars since they moved locations. It's one of my favorite restaurants though -- think it's like $16 a plate now, maybe.
    If you wanna do Sushi at non late hours, Silhouette (On Congress and maybe 7th) has happy hour prices Thursday nights for college students -- or if you can pass for a college student.

    Other than that, think all the places we used to go in the downtown area were over the $15 point. I'll see if I can think of any others though..

    Most places will cost you more than 15$ for 2 people, quit being a cheap ass and take her somewhere good regardless of price.
    I try to avoid downtown if possible most of my favorite places are in north austin surrounded by asians.
    After hours downtown I always went to Katzes, love that place.

    Oh shit, that sounds tasty. Do want.

    Also, if I'm ever in Austin I totally plan on hitting up Stubb's. Fucking love their sauces.

    Chuy's is fairly inexpensive, and it's pretty damn good (Mexican) or Chipolte.

    He said 15 for one, and Chuy's isn't downtown >.>

    Katz was ok, but it definitely felt overpriced for what you were getting -- their cheesecake shake is pretty good though~

    Thinking about all this food is making me miss Austin more ; ;

    God don't take this girl to Chipotle or any place similar if you want to continue seeing her. Basically if it's a chain, don't take her.

    If you're looking for cheap but good try Asian food. There's a pho place in the Asian plaza thing on the corner of Kramer and Llamar that I had a few days ago that was amazing. 7$ a bowl and very good quality. Though it also wasn't what I'd call a formal setting, but the food was goooooood.

    basically no where on the drag

    Only exceptions: Madam Mams.

    EDIT: Tapioca - go to tap house. You can also try Bite Mi' - its mediocre Viet subs.

    I don't understand why people like Madam Mams. First time I went there I found a hair in my food.. ..never went back again >.>;

    It's a bit away from downtown, but Red House (on Manor and..?) has great pizza. Good drinks too. One of my really good friends is a waitress there so I knew some of the staff through her and it was always good. Knowing the bartender probably made the drinks better too..

    They still call it Chuy's in Austin? The one here got turned into "Duke's" a few years ago and I haven't gone back since management changes scare me in terms of eateries.

    Thanks for all the quick replies, I honestly expected only a few replies or so! Didn't know so many BGers have been to Austin! I'm seriously hungry to try all these places out now, with her or not.

    If you have a car, drive out to Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood, TX. Greatest BBQ on Earth, and worth the drive. Other places in Austin: Habana (Cuban), Curra's (Interior Mexican), Chuy's (Tex-Mex), Magnolia Cafe, Kerbey Lane Cafe, Polvos (Mexican).

    You can also eat dinner and catch a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse.

    Actually I just thought of a great place for the price. Fonda San Miguel (sp?). It's basically fine dining mexican, but it's still mexican so it's cheap. You can probably find a menu online. It's rated the best mexican in austin and when I went it was soooooo gooood. Get the mole.

    I also went to that pho place again today (pho saigon) and the prices still can't be beat. 7$ for a LARGE bowl after tax. The leftover was taken home in a FILLED quart size container. Crazy good deal.

    If you're into indian I have heard great things about a place called the clay pot.

    Oh, I love Salt Lick. The one to the south is BYOB, but the one to the north has never had a wait for me.. and you can get Round Rock doughnuts up there which are the greatest doughnuts ever! Of course, it's like 30 mins both ways from downtown.. I'm not a fan of Kerby Lane or Magnolia, both felt overrated to me, but I can get behind Habana. Their empanadas(sp) are delicious. As far as Clay Pot goes, it's 'Americanized Indian', so take it for what it's worth.. If you've had real Indian food before, you're probably gonna be disappointed. If you're out late looking for a snack, there's a doughnut cart thing actually that makes these massive doughnuts that aren't really doughnuts, but are delicious. It's on south Lamar, near the drafthouse I believe..

    Oh, if you're in need of cheap breakfast food, Juan in a Millions is the greatest place ever. We used to go there so often.. The wait staff has probably forgotten us by now though ; ; If you're looking for brunch on Sunday, Moonshine has an amazing breakfast buffet, but you have to get there at like 9:45 or the wait will be killer. I think it's like $15 a person. Moonshine is actually one of my favorite places, but it's in the 20+ price range I think.
