Stem cell transplant has cured HIV infection in 'Berlin patient', say doctors

Is this for real or have I come across a fake news story?

    http://www.aidsmap.com/page/1577949/?r=1

Doctors who carried out a stem cell transplant on an HIV-infected man with leukaemia in 2007 say they now believe the man to have been cured of HIV infection as a result of the treatment, which introduced stem cells which happened to be resistant to HIV infection.

The man received bone marrow from a donor who had natural resistance to HIV infection; this was due to a genetic profile which led to the CCR5 co-receptor being absent from his cells. The most common variety of HIV uses CCR5 as its ‘docking station’, attaching to it in order to enter and infect CD4 cells, and people with this mutation are almost completely protected against infection.

The case was first reported at the 2008 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston, and Berlin doctors subsequently published a detailed case history in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2009.

They have now published a follow-up report in the journal Blood, arguing that based on the results of extensive tests, “It is reasonable to conclude that cure of HIV infection has been achieved in this patient.”
Full story is at the link.

this was news a while ago. If I remember correctly, the bone marrow came from someone who is among the 1~3% of Scandinavians who are immune to the virus.

If I remember correctly, this is what happened.

Its not only Scandinavians though, less than one in a thousand Northern Europeans (even fewer in Southern countries who used to belong to the Roman empire) has an immunity to the virus, while I believe 1-3% has a natural resistance - but not immunity - to it. I believe an English woman was the first one to be found to be immune to it, as a result of studying today's generation of people that seemed to have been immune to the Black Death. It is believed that, since the Plague worked in a similar way to the HIV virus, the people who were immune to the Plague (or had a natural resistance to it) had an increased chance of survival, thus allowing the resistant gene CCR5 delta 32 to spread. For resistance it requires one copy of the gene from either the mother or father, while an immunity requires two copies of it, from both the father and mother.

Stem cell transplant from a patient immune to HIV to a patient that has HIV isn't exactly a viable cure though, even though it's been shown to work. It's both painful and risky, and there's not nearly enough people immune to HIV to go around xD

its a start. Cant do this to everyone lol. given time It could lead to a real cure, that can be administered in not such a painful way. Overall, its cool that a person has been cured.

Why are we calling this a "stem cell transplant" instead of a "bone marrow transplant"? I know they can mean the same thing but we've had, what, 5 posts already about fetuses?
