    Problem activating N wireless

Ok lol linksys I know my router is a WRT120N

    Anyway

I have an Iphone a new laptop a PS3 and maybe an Apple TV to put on WIFI and they all support N so I wanted to move my network to N only (currently Mixed)

So i changed my network to Wireless N only

but none of my machines can connect WIFI

they see the SSID but they keep saying unable to connect

w/e I use any channel or 20 or 40 mhz frequence

and I even tried to change WPA and it still doesn't work. But when i put it back to Mixed it work

    Am I doing something wrong?

I'm guessing the cards in the machines don't support N which is why setting it to mixed works.

What's the purpose of limiting it to N only? I don't believe the whole network is limited in Mixed mode, just the machine runs at the max speed of the adapter.

I think of it like this:

    Gigabit switch
    100 mbps NIC
    1000 mbps NIC
    1000 mbps NIC

Machines that support 1000 mbps will communicate at 1000 mbps (if 1000 is on both sides), and if they try to communicate with the 100 mbps NIC it will be at that speed. Your whole network isn't bottlenecked by that one machine, only communications with that machine are. If you had a 100 mbps switch and 1000 mbps NICs the max speed of the network would be 100 mbps tho.

only the iPhone 4 supports N, and only at 2.4Ghz... and no PS3 supports N. double check your laptop also (i'm sure it would at this point though, if it is new). this may be the problem, meaning you'll have to stay with mixed. despite all the trash talking of Linksys routers I run a WRT610Nv2 w/DD-WRT at home and have never had any problems at all.

Good advice there, and they include considerations like running DD-WRT (which I can say is much, much better than my stock Linksys firmware)

Make sure you typed your password in right, and that MAC filtering isn't on. Other then that it should be able to connect to wireless N. Is it not even connecting to mixed mode?

I agree with this. You shouldnt notice a difference using mixed mode. If its a N device, it should use N speeds, if its G, it should use G speeds, it doesn't bottleneck at the lowest speed.

Why do you need to set it to strictly N?

    ----------
I take this back, some lower end routers do bottleneck your connection at the lowest speed, you would have to check to see if your router is truly running mixed mode, or if it is defaulting to the lowest speed connected.

Make sure for the wireless security it's set to WPA2 and Encryption to AES only.
