FFXIV Freezes when I Minimize (or hit Alt)

I use an HP Envy (decent specs, but maybe the worst laptop ever constructed) - i7 processor, ATI Mobility Raedon HD 5850. When I try to minimize FFXIV in windowed mode, about 50% of the time the game lags out for a good 3 minutes, and sometimes freezes completely. The same thing also seems to happen if i try to adjust the system volume while in game, or hit the alt key at all. I don't even have to hit alt+tab, just alt by itself lags me out completely, so I can't use half of my macro space. I know alt+tab was crashing people, but idk if this is related.

Anyone have any idea what is going on or how I can fix the issue?
