    MotorStorm: Apocalypse

    Last week a french site claimed to have stolen stuff of MotorStorm 3 and it seems they were right.

    Sony's pre-E3 reveals continue with confirmation of MotorStorm: Apocalypse (a.k.a. "MotorStorm 3"). Confirming previously leaked details, Apocalypse takes the franchise to a new urban setting, with a focus on destruction -- not unlike the recently released Split/Second. Players will be (foolishly!) racing through a city in the middle of an earthquake, driving through collapsing buildings.

    "This isn't post-apocalyptic. It's apocalyptic. You are there when it happens. It's survival racing," the PlayStation.Blog adds. In addition to the new setting, developer Evolution Studios is promising a greater emphasis on online and split-screen multiplayer, offering split-screen team racing in online, 16-player matches.

    MotorStorm 3 will be playable at E3 next week. Expect our full hands-on report then.

    Has the potential to be awesome.

    Only things I could ask for in this over Pacific Rift, is actual steering wheel support (PR has none), and a more friendly difficulty level. PR is fucking HARD, AI gives you no breaks at all, so if you fuck up, better off restarting.

    Great to hear splitscreen is still in. I was in awe when I decided to try four-play split screen for shits and giggles in their previous game just to see it actually looking damn good still, *and* keeping a stable framerate to boot, something I hadn't seem in a modern game in a long time.
    (and in the case of racing games, being able to race with AI in multiplayer, whoooo)

    Hello, PlayStation blog readers. I’m excited to be able to deliver some big news about MotorStorm Apocalypse: the game will officially be bringing off-road racing mayhem of apocalyptic proportions to your PS3 on April 12, 2011.

    And to introduce the game’s cool cover art, here is Matt Southern, the Game Director at Evolution Studios.

    Our cover art has been sent to shops and websites ready for pre-order. Once again we’ve got different boxes depending on where you live! I thought I’d share them here.

    Here’s our European box. Our priority here is to show what is new in the game, and it slightly harks back to the box for MotorStorm 1. It is quite unusual for a racing game and we spent a long time working out what we thought would be right.

    I’d love to know which you all like the best – and what cover art over the years have really stood out for you. My all-time favourite is probably the EU/Japanese version of ICO, painted by Ueda-San and inspired by The Nostalgia of the Infinite by Giorgio de Chirico. I also get a nostalgia buzz from looking at the games I played in the 80’s with airbrush art by Bob Wakelin. Good times.
    You’ve read about some of the cool new features the game has to offer, and watched the first in-depth developer diary video. And the game just had a great showing at the Sony booth at CES last week, wowing people with its mind-blowing 3D and intense racing across, and through, gigantic skyscrapers.

    So don’t forget to pre-order the game before it hits on April 12 to get one of the cool pre-order packs available. There’s much more in store for MotorStorm Apocalypse in the coming months to look forward to. Until next time!

    EU case looks miles better and gives a good representation of what to expect (terrain breaking down in the helmet's reflection). The backing of the Apocalypse spelling is also nice, and makes the US cover feel naked without that. ;/

    Still looking forward to the game, but I'm not sure if it'll be a day one for me given my huge fucking backlog of games I'm forcing myself to trudge through currently which'll take a few months.

    MotorStorm Apocalypse closed beta in session
    A MotorStorm Apocalypse private beta test is underway, according to an invitation forwarded to us by a UK-based tipster. The beta includes four scheduled event nights over the next two weeks, as detailed in the invitation (in full after the break), which are intended to stress test the servers and online matchmaking leading up to the game's April 12 launch.

    According to a recent thread on the Official PlayStation Community (EU) forums, the beta appears as "Network Beta Trial Notification - PlayStation 3 beta Trial PSN" to better disguise its identity. Don't take it personally -- it's private, after all. You'll likely get your test run in the (public) demo, which is due on PSN before the full Apocalypse.

    Similar to news already issued from our Japanese and European territories, SCEA can confirm that we are officially delaying release of MotorStorm Apocalypse from its scheduled April 12th date. We will provide more information regarding release timing at a later date.

    I'm amazed they kept the 4p splitscreen in. I would have figured with the deforming landscapes that they'd either tone it down to 2p or ditch it entirely. I'm guessing all of the optimizations they had to do for the 3-D support allowed that to be possible.
