    Repairing Repairs (07/15/2011)

    Patch 1.18 will usher in a host of crowd-pleasing improvements to the repair system, such as large-scale revisions to recipes and adjustments to the rate of success.
    Simplifying Repairs

    Patch 1.18 will see all repair materials replaced with a universal item called dark matter. Dark matter comes in five grades, each of which can be used to repair equipment whose optimal rank falls within a certain range. As long as the range is correct, dark matter can be used to repair equipment of any class.

    Repair Material Description
    Grade 1 Dark Matter Universal repair material. Use to repair equipment for class ranks 1-10.
    Grade 2 Dark Matter Universal repair material. Use to repair equipment for class ranks 11-20.
    Grade 3 Dark Matter Universal repair material. Use to repair equipment for class ranks 21-30.
    Grade 4 Dark Matter Universal repair material. Use to repair equipment for class ranks 31-40.
    Grade 5 Dark Matter Universal repair material. Use to repair equipment for class ranks 41-50.

    * Dark matter can be obtained from vendor NPCs, as guildleve rewards, and through gathering.

    Repair System Adjustments

    From patch 1.18 onwards, repairs will always be successful when made by those who possess sufficient rank in the appropriate skill. Furthermore, the chance of conducting repairs without expending materials will increase slightly overall.

    NPC Repairs

    In order to improve the usability of NPC repairs, the fee for such services will be greatly reduced.

    I didn't see that one coming. I welcome this. I generally always have the classes/ranks to repair a bunch of my crap I want to sell off but I can never be bothered to hunt down the stupid repair ingredients.

    Thumbs up to making equipment wear a little less stupid.

    I like this. No more "/sh Can anyone repair my crab bow?" every minute while I'm sat there next to them thinking someone with an oak branch will do it because I have none. I can just get up and repair it for them instead of having to ask them to run to the wards to buy a branch. Fun part is my ARC is 50, but your weapons last so long when you're 50 and not grinding so I don't bother to carry the repair mats. I will probably only carry tier 3, 4, 5 dark matter but that covers almost everything useful anyway.

    Only problem is it's going to make some items even more worthless than they already are, and some have no use. SE should address that too at some point, it's ridiculous that botany only has two or three valuable items. Either recipes need to require more materials or the drop rate of gathered items needs to be lower.

    This is about the best thing they could have done besides getting rid of equipment wear entirely. It shouldn't be much of a hassle to get most anything fixed now, and no having to go to the wards to pick up 15 different repair mats. NPC cost reduction will be nice too, though with how much slower stuff wears in general now I rarely need urgent repairs and can usually wait for an LS member or set up a bazaar.

    Changes like these were probably almost necessary with the new durability hit on HPing, especially if it's a big hit. Would suck to have some bad luck wipes in an instance or dying a couple times soloing leves and not being able to get your stuff fixed. As it is now, you can see it coming and plan ahead, but you might not be able to after this patch.

    I think recipes require too many materials as is. If anything just add new recipes to use items that won't be used anymore.
    This change is really nice as well as the NPC repair.

    So you're asking to waste more / carry more mats? Seems very silly. That's like saying lets make the game even more of a convoluted mess then it is.

    Oooh.

    In that other thread, I proposed permanent damage to commonly crafted items, to stimulate the economy. i.e. every time you repair something, the max condition goes down by 1%. As someone mentioned, stuff lasts long enough when used at the proper level, so this wouldn't hurt the individual too much: How long does it take to wear an item down to red, let's say 20 times, and then the max condition is still at 80%. The overall value of the item would go down, though. <insert car analogy here>


    /edit: then add a possibility to break up a used item for Dark Matter....

    Edit: I'm curious as to how Dark Matter will be obtained. Will it pop from time to time while gathering/killing mobs or maybe it can be purchased from an NPC. Or both.

    Yes.

    Right on. I somehow missed that part of the message. That should certainly help. Also, hopefully it'll be out of the inventory and into the section where the 'crystals' are stored or whatever they're called that you use when you craft. Shards or something, I forget.

    As I've mentioned before, durability/wear/repairs have never been the slightest issue for me, so it's almost a little strange seeing such an overwhelming positive response. But if everyone else is happy, I'm happy!
