On June 4 2010, first footage of Red Faction: Armageddon will debut in the form of a short teaser trailer on GameTrailers.[9] THQ has announced that the game will be shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010.[10][11] THQ has announced that they plan to bring sequels to all their key franchises around every two years.[12]

I missed gametrailers TV by a minute. Now I'm having to wait for them to upload the teaser to the site.

oh yay. another game where there's only two colors: gray and red. The last one was so painfully dull it hurt. the only fun was mass destroying buildings. and seconding the request for geomod. blowing up a looong tunnel in a multiplayer match and sniping from above was more fun than should be legal.

Red Faction Armageddon will take place half a century after the Martian revolution of Red Faction: Guerrilla putting players in the shoes of the grandson of Alec Mason and Samanya, THQ revealed this morning.

Here's the official publisher synopsis of the story:

When the massive Terraformer that supplies Mars with its Earth-like air and weather is destroyed, the atmosphere turns to chaos, super-tornados and lightning storms engulf the planet. To survive, the Colonists flee to the underground mines and build a network of habitable caves.

Five years later, Darius Mason, grandson of Martian Revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya, runs a lucrative business from Bastion, underground hub of Colonist activity. Mining, scavenging, mercenary work—if the job is dangerous, Darius is your man. Few sane people now venture to the ravaged surface, aside from contractors like Darius and the smugglers who run goods between the settlements.

When Darius is tricked into reopening a mysterious shaft in an old Marauder temple, he releases a long-dormant evil and unleashes Armageddon on Mars. As Colonist and Marauder settlements are torn asunder, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind. The battle will take them across the storm-blasted planet... and below it, to the very heart of the unspeakable threat.

The game will, as was revealed last night, take place underground this time around with players fighting to free colonists from alien cocoons, reclaim cultist fortifications on the surface of the planet and hunting for artifacts to create alien weapons.

One of the big new weapons of the game will be an evolved Nano Forge, which can unleash blasts, "tremblers" and "rhino charges". Of course that also means the game will have full-on destruction again, the best part of Guerrilla.

Finally, THQ says that their game will include a new extermination mode that has four players teaming up online to take on never ending tides of attackers.

Wow, way to pull a fast one on us there. I was certain that the rainbow-farting unicorn stunt was for Saints Row 3. As it turns out, it's related to Red Faction: Armageddon. The more you think about it, the more it begins to seem like a natural fit.

Mr. Toots -- yeah, they gave him a name -- will be a playable weapon once we collectively build up one million downloads of the just-released demo for Armageddon. Above is an unfortunately brief look at how this weapon will handle.

Sorry Red Faction fans, but it looks like THQ has set the franchise riding off into the sunset. During an investor call this evening THQ CEO Brian Farrell designated the franchise as “niche” and no longer worth pursuing.

“Given that that title, now in two successive versions, has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way,” he said.

The team behind the franchise, Volition, will now move on to start work on the Guillermo del Toro project Insane. Farrell called the Volition team “talented.” The franchise had some success with Red Faction: Guerilla but the recently released Red Faction: Armageddon garnered a 71 on Metacritic as well as mediocre sales numbers. Sad to see a franchise put to sleep but anything’s better than the layoffs that the industry has been experiencing.
